Job Description

Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to providing shelter and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness in New York City. Established with the mission to help families regain stability and thrive, HFH operates several family shelters that deliver much more than just a safe place to sleep. The organization emphasizes comprehensive community programs that foster resilience and self-sufficiency among the families it serves. These programs are thoughtfully designed to support both shelter residents and community members, creating a nurturing environment that promotes growth and positive outcomes long after families transition out of homelessness.

HFH’s Families with Children facility, located in the Soundview area of the Bronx, houses an innovative culinary center that offers specialized training in culinary arts, baking/pastry, and barista skills. This training facility exemplifies HFH’s holistic approach to empowerment and skill-building, supplying residents and community members with practical knowledge and vocational skills to enhance their employment opportunities. The culinary center serves as a dynamic educational site, providing hands-on instruction led by expert chefs and instructors who are passionate about fostering learning and confidence in the kitchen.

The Assistant Chef Instructor role is a vital part of this educational framework, supporting the smooth operations of the culinary center and contributing to the success of the training programs. The Assistant Chef Instructor works closely under the guidance of the Lead Chef Instructor, Chef Instructor, and the Director of Culinary Education to maintain an efficient and professional learning environment. This role involves assisting with class preparation, supporting hands-on instruction during culinary and baking classes, and ensuring that the kitchen is safe, clean, and well-stocked.

In this position, the Assistant Chef Instructor will play a hands-on role in helping students grasp culinary concepts, providing timely and constructive feedback, and sometimes leading sessions independently when required. The role demands a balance of culinary skill, instructional ability, and operational awareness to ensure that classes run smoothly and that students feel supported and motivated in their learning experience. Beyond instructional duties, the assistant will also assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and overall kitchen organization according to the operational standards set by the Director of Culinary Education.

This full-time role offers competitive compensation with a salary of $46,000 per year and includes a robust benefits package that addresses health, retirement, paid time off, and work-life balance, reflecting HFH’s commitment to supporting its employees as they contribute meaningfully to the community. Joining Homes for the Homeless as an Assistant Chef Instructor means becoming part of a compassionate team dedicated to making a lasting difference in the lives of families in need while advancing your culinary career in a dynamic and supportive environment.
