Job Description

The State of New Hampshire's Department of Health and Human Services, specifically within the Division for Children, Youth, and Families, is actively seeking a qualified candidate to join their team at the Sununu Youth Services Center (SYSC) located in Manchester, NH. This institution plays a pivotal role in providing care and services tailored to the needs of children and youth under state supervision, ensuring their safety, rehabilitation, and wellbeing. The SYSC’s operational success relies heavily on the ability to provide consistent, nutritious, and well-prepared meals to its residents and staff, an essential part of daily care and facility management.

The position available is for an Assistant Chef, a full-time role that offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $15.93 to $20.80. The chosen candidate will be integral to supporting and overseeing a variety of food service functions within this state-run institution. This role is not only about culinary skill but also about leadership and management within a structured, safety-conscious environment. The Assistant Chef will assist in supervising kitchen support activities including the preparation, delivery, and oversight of food services aimed at ensuring the nutritional needs of the facility's residents and staff are consistently met.

As a leader within the kitchen team, the Assistant Chef will train, supervise, and evaluate cooks, ensuring all food preparation adheres to sanitary and institutional standards. The role requires maintaining high standards of hygiene, food safety, and equipment cleanliness in compliance with industry regulations. Additionally, the Assistant Chef will play a significant role in inventory management, including ordering supplies such as dairy, baked goods, and frozen foods, organizing and rotating food stocks, and overseeing the upkeep of kitchen equipment and spaces.

The position demands a commitment to the agency’s mission and values, including the application of Practice Model theories in everyday duties. This helps foster a rehabilitative environment for the youth served by the center. The Assistant Chef is expected to collaborate closely with supervisors regarding workplace safety concerns and to contribute to the overall safety culture of the kitchen and food service area.

The State of New Hampshire underscores that formal education and related work experience can be interchangeable for this position, allowing for flexibility based on the candidate's background. A high school diploma or equivalent is required along with a valid driver’s license. Candidates must also comply with specific hygiene standards including the willingness to wear hairnets and follow all food industry hygiene protocols.

Working for the state offers a comprehensive total compensation package including medical and prescription drug benefits, dental coverage, flexible spending accounts, state retirement plans, paid holidays, leave plans, life insurance, and wellness programs. This comprehensive benefits package enhances not only financial security but also work-life balance and health wellness, making the Assistant Chef role a rewarding career opportunity within public service.

This role provides a chance to be part of a dedicated team within the public sector, contributing directly to the care and improved quality of life for vulnerable youth.
