Job Description
Grand Central Bakery is an esteemed artisan bakery that revolutionized the bread scene in the Northwest by introducing rustic, high-quality artisan loaves since 1989. The company is deeply committed to values centered around sustainability, quality, and community involvement. As a Certified B Corporation, Grand Central Bakery aligns itself with a global movement focused on using business as a force for good. This involves careful selection of ingredients sourced locally and sustainably, as well as dedicated care for its employees and active investment in the communities it serves. The bakery operates multiple cafe locations across Seattle, upholding a mission to serve authentic and delicious food made from sustainable, local ingredients crafted with care and expertise.
The position of Assistant Cafe Manager at Grand Central Bakery is a key leadership role that supports daily cafe operations and advances the bakery’s mission. This role involves training, coaching, and managing teams to ensure exceptional customer service and high-quality product delivery. The Assistant Cafe Manager acts as a reliable Person-in-Charge during shifts, demonstrating adaptability and a positive leadership presence throughout the workplace. This floating role covers multiple cafes across Seattle, requiring flexibility to work varied shifts including openings, middays, and closings, as well as weekends and holidays. The role supports the Cafe Manager in motivating and inspiring team members, promoting a culture of excellence, and maintaining a productive and welcoming cafe environment. With a wage of $23.40 per hour, plus an average of $9.00 to $11.00 per hour in tips, this position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime.
The Assistant Cafe Manager is responsible for ensuring that the cafe operates smoothly by handling performance management through ongoing coaching and effective communication, participating in hiring and training new team members, and troubleshooting operational challenges efficiently. They are also responsible for maintaining safety standards, food quality, and compliance with health regulations including possessing a valid Food Handler's Card at all times. The role demands familiarity with Point-of-Sale systems, cash handling accuracy, inventory management, scheduling, payroll completion in the absence of the Cafe Manager, and maintaining cost goals. A hands-on approach is essential, with the Assistant Cafe Manager expected to pitch in during busy times, assist with cleaning and general maintenance, and uphold Grand Central Bakery's mission, vision, and values.
To thrive in this role, the Assistant Cafe Manager must be able to lead teams by example, communicate effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes noisy environment, and contribute to a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture. Experience in cafe, restaurant, or coffee shop settings—especially leadership experience—is preferred. The position is part of a unionized workforce under the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW 3000) and adheres to the collective bargaining agreement. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, possess basic math skills, and demonstrate reliability with punctual attendance. This role requires physical activity including standing, walking, handling equipment, lifting, and working amidst exposure to grain dust within a busy cafe environment.
