Kirkwood Community College, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a well-established educational institution committed to providing quality education and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. The college's mission is to empower students and staff through continuous improvement and strategic initiatives that align with its vision and values. Kirkwood Community College is dedicated to creating an environment where mutual accountability, service excellence, perseverance, and leadership are championed in every facet of its operations.
The college is currently seeking a dedicated professional to join its hospitality team as a Bartender and Trainer at the Maikka Lobby Bar and Patio area. This role is crucial in advancing the college's strategic goals by ensuring exceptional food and beverage services, maintaining quality standards, and overseeing a team of bartenders and cocktail servers. The position offers an exciting opportunity for an individual with a passion for hospitality and leadership to contribute significantly to the college's hospitality arts programs.
As a Bartender and Trainer, you will be responsible for managing daily operations at the Maikka Lobby Bar, including building and updating drink menus, ensuring patrons receive outstanding service, and maintaining a safe environment in compliance with "Serving Alcohol with Care" principles. The role requires proficiency in cash handling, POS terminal operations, and inventory management, as well as a strong focus on training and supervising staff. A key part of this position involves working collaboratively with the Restaurant and Beverage Manager to control costs related to beverage, labor, and food while ensuring operational excellence.
In addition to bartending duties, this role serves as a Trainer in the Kirkwood Center for Hospitality Arts and Continuing Education, where you will supervise and enhance the learning experiences of students. This unique blend of responsibilities makes the position not only operational but also educational, directly influencing the quality of hospitality training at the college.
The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding organizational skills, leadership abilities, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all patrons and staff. Regular attendance, adherence to grooming and dress codes, and strong communication skills, including proficiency in English, are essential. Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and performing repetitive motions typical of a bar setting.
This is a full-time position that requires a minimum of two years’ experience in a related hospitality or beverage setting, along with at least one year of leadership experience or equivalent education and work experience. The role is suitable for individuals who are at least 21 years old and possess reliable transportation. The college values continual improvement, mutual accountability, service excellence, perseverance, and leadership, making it an ideal environment for hospitality professionals seeking growth and impact in their careers.
