This role, the Optical Assembly Technician 2, is a specialized position within the IDEX MSS business unit. It is a second shift (B-Shift) opportunity, with working hours from 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, designed for individuals skilled in high-precision optical assembly and alignment. Optical Assembly Technicians in this role are responsible for performing advanced assembly and active alignment operations that demand micron-level and sub-micron accuracy. Their work involves the meticulous integration of optical elements, such as lenses, into precision mechanical housings within a highly controlled clean-room manufacturing environment.
The position requires the use of sophisticated tools and metrology equipment including air-bearing spindles, autocollimators, alignment telescopes, precision stages, micrometers, bore gauges, and dial indicators. Technicians must ensure optical and mechanical performance meets stringent quality standards by adjusting decenter, tip, tilt, and axial positioning of components. They permanently secure optics using adhesives during the curing process without compromising the alignment, carefully inspecting for defects such as scratches or coating problems.
A significant aspect of this role is troubleshooting and resolving complex assembly challenges that may arise due to tolerance stack-ups, fixture inaccuracies, part variability, or contamination. The technician independently interprets optical and mechanical drawings and applies technical judgment to adapt and refine assembly processes as needed. Collaboration with engineering and quality teams is crucial for addressing technical issues and contributing feedback for process improvements, yield enhancement, and design for manufacturability.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Technical certification, associate degree, or equivalent advanced vocational training preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in precision optical assembly or optical metrology
- Experience achieving micron-level alignment accuracy
- Ability to work independently on complex optical assemblies
- Proficiency with optical alignment tools and metrology equipment
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Perform active alignment of lenses and optical elements into metal housings using precision fixturing
- Use alignment and metrology tools such as air-bearing spindles, autocollimators, alignment telescopes, precision stages, and indicators to achieve required tolerances
- Adjust decenter, tip, tilt, and axial position to meet defined optical and mechanical specifications
- Apply adhesives and permanently secure optics while maintaining alignment during cure
- Inspect optical elements for defects including scratches, digs, chips, and coating defects
- Inspect machined metal housings for burrs, surface damage, and dimensional inconsistencies
- Evaluate cosmetic and functional acceptability using defined optical inspection criteria
- Determine fitness-for-use of optics and hardware prior to assembly and escalate issues as required
- Measure critical features using high-precision metrology tools including micrometers, bore gauges, comparators, and dial indicators
- Verify alignment results and dimensional stability before, during, and after bonding
- Independently troubleshoot alignment and assembly challenges, including tolerance stack-up, fixture inaccuracies, part variability, and contamination
- Adapt alignment and assembly techniques within controlled parameters when documented processes are incomplete or ambiguous
- Partner with engineering and quality to resolve complex assembly issues
- Accurately document alignment data, measurements, and final build conditions
- Provide technical feedback to support process improvement, yield enhancement, and design for manufacturability
- Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions related to optical assembly issues
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, repeatability, and discipline in clean-room operations
