Job Description

The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, is an esteemed public garden and accredited museum located west of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Spanning 1,200 acres across the municipalities of Chaska, Chanhassen, and Victoria, the Arboretum offers visitors a unique experience through beautifully maintained gardens, diverse plant collections, natural areas, a farm, research demonstrations, educational programs for youth and adults, engaging events, and exhibits. As a member of the American Public Garden Association, it is committed to conservation, education, and community engagement, fostering a greater appreciation of the natural world and horticulture. The Arboretum plays a vital role in the region’s cultural and environmental landscape while supporting the University’s mission to advance research and educational outreach. It maintains a strong commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, inclusion, and sustainability throughout its operations and employee relations.

The Arboretum is currently hiring a temporary bartender to provide exceptional beverage service during events hosted at the facility. This short-term position, limited to 67 days or less per calendar year, offers an hourly wage of $20. The bartender will be responsible for setting up and tearing down the bar, maintaining the bar’s inventory, serving guests in a courteous and professional manner consistent with established standards, and following all relevant food safety and alcohol service regulations. The successful candidate will play a critical role in enhancing the guest experience during special events by delivering timely, courteous, and high-quality service of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Ideal candidates must hold at least a high school diploma or its equivalent, have a basic knowledge of food and beverage preparation, and possess a strong understanding of various alcoholic beverages. Completion of T.I.P.S. training and the ability to acquire any necessary government licenses or certificates are required. Candidates should be proficient in handling cash transactions, using point-of-sale systems, and managing bar inventory. Excellent communication skills in English, along with outstanding customer service experience, are essential to success in this role. In addition to core bartending duties such as mixing drinks, applying portion control, and maintaining sanitation, the bartender must collaborate effectively with the events team, catering staff, and management. This role also demands physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform manual tasks involved in drink preparation and bar upkeep.

Preference is given to University of Minnesota students who are registered and maintain the required number of credits. Familiarity with Arboretum spaces, personnel, and practices, prior bartending experience, knowledge of drink recipes, and availability for evening and weekend shifts are considered strong assets. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable hospitality experience within a beautiful, community-focused environment tied to a world-class research university.

Working with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum means joining an organization dedicated to excellence in public garden management and environmental education while enjoying a vibrant workplace culture recognized for its diversity, inclusivity, and employee appreciation. The Arboretum fosters a positive work environment where staff members are encouraged to maintain professional attitudes and uphold safety and legal standards rigorously. The role requires punctuality, appropriate work attire, and adherence to state, federal, and organizational liquor laws to ensure compliant and responsible alcohol service.

Candidates can expect to engage with a range of responsibilities, including inventory tracking based on Banquet Event Orders, preparing fresh garnishes and perishables daily, operating the POS system for order entry and payment processing, ensuring bar area cleanliness, and reporting any challenges or guest concerns to supervisors promptly. The Arboretum supports employees with comprehensive onboarding and access to accommodations during the application process if needed. As part of the University of Minnesota, the workplace offers equal opportunity employment free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender identity, disability, or any protected status. Join this dedicated team to contribute to memorable event experiences in a stunning natural setting while advancing your hospitality skills and professional development.
