Job Description
The YMCA of Greater San Francisco is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As part of a global movement, the Y is committed to empowering individuals and building strong community bonds. With its mission centered around providing a safe and inclusive environment, the YMCA offers programs and services that address some of the nation’s most pressing social issues. The organization fosters a culture where people can be themselves, feel they belong, and have the opportunity to grow and develop. The YMCA of Greater San Francisco prioritizes values such as truth, courage, authenticity, accessibility, dependability, creativity, dignity, and empathy. These guide the organization’s approach to nurturing a vibrant community and supporting each individual with respect and compassion.
The Aquatics Program Coordinator position at the YMCA of Greater San Francisco is a pivotal role within the aquatics department, reporting directly to the Aquatics Director. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the aquatics programs including swim lessons, swim team operations, and staff management. It ensures safety, high standards, and program quality while fostering a welcoming atmosphere for participants. The coordinator divides their week evenly between delivering direct service — such as supervising instructors and working with participants — and managing administrative and program development tasks. The typical schedule is Monday through Thursday from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, providing a balanced structure of hands-on involvement and behind-the-scenes coordination.
Core duties of this role include recruiting, hiring, training, and scheduling swim instructors and coaches; leading staff through performance reviews and ongoing training to maintain certifications and program excellence; and coordinating with community partners and stakeholders for outreach and marketing efforts. The Aquatics Program Coordinator has a critical role in managing swim lesson rosters, curriculum quality, and safety compliance in collaboration with safety and program directors. This position also emphasizes customer service by ensuring a positive, supportive experience for all swim lesson participants and their families.
Candidates for this role should be prepared for a dynamic work environment that includes indoor pool settings and occasional outdoor activities. The job requires physical stamina for standing, walking, managing equipment, and demonstrating swim techniques as needed. A key part of the position is providing coverage for swim instructors or lifeguards when necessary, requiring flexibility with mornings, evenings, weekends, and special events. This ensures uninterrupted aquatic programming and safety.
The position offers an hourly wage ranging from $28.00 to $33.00, reflecting salary benchmarking and grant fund guidelines. Employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes dental and health insurance, health savings accounts, paid time off, vision insurance, and employee discounts, supporting overall well-being and job satisfaction. This full-time, in-person role promises meaningful career growth for individuals passionate about aquatic safety, team leadership, and community engagement.
