Job Description
Quack's 43rd Street Bakery is a well-established scratch bakery located in Hyde Park at the corner of 43rd and Duval in Austin. Specializing in natural, scratch-made, and approachable baked goods, this bakery serves both retail customers and wholesale clients. The Hyde Park location is a bustling shop known for its loyal regular customers and is dedicated to producing high-quality pies, cookies, tea breads, brownies and bars, eclairs, and batters. Quack's is a cornerstone of the Austin baking community, having built a reputation for excellence and consistency over many years. The bakery prides itself on staying true to traditional baking methods while continuously evolving to meet new tastes and demands.
Currently, Quack's 43rd Street Bakery is seeking full-time AM shift bakers for their production team. These bakers work from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., focusing on the production of various baked goods from scratch according to standardized recipes. The starting pay is $18 per hour, with individual pay rates determined by experience. The position requires working five days a week with scheduling flexibility, especially during weekends and holidays, as these are the busiest times for the bakery. This full-time role comes with access to healthcare benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance for employees scheduled for at least 30 hours per week.
The AM shift baker's responsibilities are diverse and essential to the smooth running of the bakery. Employees are expected to efficiently complete the daily production list while maintaining high standards of quality and consistency. Bakers must have the ability to work collaboratively with their teammates to finish all tasks on time, ensuring that every product meets the bakery’s quality standards. Attention to cleanliness and adherence to health and safety guidelines are critical parts of the role. Moreover, bakers contribute to kitchen organization by following FIFO (first in, first out) procedures, completing cleaning duties, communicating operational needs or issues, managing inventory check-ins, and assisting with training new team members. Assistance with shift supervision and kitchen management duties may also be required.
Ideal candidates will have solid experience reading and following large-scale and small-scale recipes, proficiently mixing batters and doughs, and a general understanding of baking techniques such as the creaming and sponge methods. Knowledge of making fillings like pastry creams and fruit fillings is valued. Successful bakers at Quack's have a keen eye for detail and the ability to make on-the-fly adjustments to recipes or production processes when necessary. Excellent time management and communication skills are essential, alongside being a team player who positively collaborates with other bakers and staff.
The bakery emphasizes a culture of mutual support, creativity, and a passion for baking. With over 40 years of history and as an integral part of the Austin culinary scene, Quack’s Bakery offers opportunities for career growth, professional development, and being part of a close-knit team of passionate individuals. Candidates interested in contributing their skills and growing within a supportive environment are encouraged to apply and share what unique qualities they would bring to the team.
