Job Description
Michigan State University Culinary Services Dining Operations is a vital department within Residential and Hospitality Services located in East Lansing, Michigan, United States. The department is committed to providing exceptional dining experiences to a diverse student body and university community. As part of a large educational institution known for its excellence in academics and community engagement, the Culinary Services team plays a critical role in supporting campus life and student wellbeing through high-quality food preparation and service.
The position of Akers Cook I is a full-time role based out of Holmes Hall, a key facility within the MSU dining network. This role demands dedication to preparing, seasoning, cooking, and portioning a wide variety of food items to meet the needs of a large student population. It operates within a dynamic and diverse workforce that thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. The Ceremonial and Hospitality Services department at MSU emphasizes teamwork and organization, and the Akers Cook I is essential in organizing the work area and supervising student staff to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
In addition to routine cooking responsibilities, this role requires flexibility in shift work, with scheduled hours from 6 am to 2:30 am Sunday through Thursday, and weekends off (Friday and Saturday). Given the university's designation of all SLE (Student Labor Employee) positions as critical, the Akers Cook I is expected to continue reporting to work even in the event of university closures or emergency conditions, unless specified by remote work agreements. This underscores the importance of this role in maintaining consistent food service to the campus community.
Candidates for this position must have a practical understanding of cooking methods, processes, and materials, and be able to follow prescribed recipes accurately. Experience equivalent to at least two years as a Food Service Worker or a comparable combination of technical training and relevant work experience is essential. The ability to uphold high standards of personal hygiene in line with sanitation rules and regulations is also critical in maintaining a safe and clean kitchen environment. Physical stamina is required, as occasional lifting of 26 to 75 pounds is part of the job duties.
This position offers hourly compensation at a rate of $20.73, reflecting the specialized skills and commitment required. As a supportive and inclusive employer, Michigan State University ensures equal employment opportunities for all applicants regardless of race, gender, age, disability status, or other protected categories. Applicants are required to submit a resume outlining their qualifications and experience.
Overall, the Akers Cook I role at Michigan State University Culinary Services Dining Operations represents an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about culinary arts and food service within an academic environment. This role offers a stable, full-time career path with structured work hours and the chance to contribute positively to the MSU community's daily life through excellent food service operations.
