Job Description
The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission is a vital governmental entity responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Cedar Rapids Airport, a key regional transportation hub in Iowa. The commission ensures that airport facilities and equipment are maintained at a high standard to support safe, efficient, and reliable air travel for both passengers and cargo. As a full-time employer, the commission emphasizes commitment to quality service, safety compliance, and operational excellence, while fostering a work environment that values diversity and equal opportunity. The employment offered by the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission comes with competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for professional growth in a critical infrastructure environment.
This role focuses on performing labor-intensive and advanced technical maintenance and repair services on airport equipment and facilities. It includes lead worker responsibilities and deputizing for the Airport Maintenance Supervisor when necessary. The position requires hands-on maintenance and repair tasks related to the airfield lighting system, covering components such as runway and taxiway elevated and in-pavement lights, signs, wind cones, rotating beacons, underground cables, electrical manholes and junction boxes, regulators, circuit breaker panels, and switches. The role also involves performing preventive maintenance across a variety of systems including baggage conveyor mechanisms, boarding bridges, security systems, passenger information displays, revenue control infrastructure, and fuel distribution systems.
In addition, the role demands technical upkeep of airfield lighting, emergency generators, gate operators, and airfield sensors to ensure uninterrupted airport operations. Candidates must have completed a rigorous four-year electrical apprenticeship that encompasses construction, control, safety, and high-voltage electrical components and procedures. A minimum of two years' experience operating as a journeyman maintenance electrician is essential, although equivalent job experience can substitute for formal apprenticeship credentials. The position requires the ability to pass and maintain a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security background check and to hold a valid Iowa driver's license.
Employees in this role should be prepared to respond to emergencies and other required duties outside regular working hours, reflecting the critical nature of airport operations. The starting salary ranges from $71,884.80 to $83,366.40 annually, which corresponds to an hourly pay rate of $34.56 to $40.08, dependent on experience. The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission offers a range of valuable benefits, including dental insurance, health insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, and vision insurance to support the wellbeing and security of its workforce. This position is based on-site to maintain hands-on control over airport maintenance activities, contributing directly to the safety and efficiency of the airport environment.
