Job Requirements
- Must hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating or have held an FAA Credential with a tower rating for at least six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Possession of a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA regulations (pre-employment, random, reasonable cause/suspicion, post-accident)
- Ability to work under general supervision performing duties independently
- Knowledge of VFR and IFR air traffic rules and procedures
- Capable of maintaining situational awareness and multitasking in a dynamic environment
- Strong communication and coordination skills with pilots and other controllers
Job Qualifications
- Hold a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or an FAA Credential with a tower rating
- Have minimum six months experience in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Current Class II Medical Certificate
- Experience in controlling and sequencing VFR and IFR traffic
- Knowledge of FAA air traffic control regulations and procedures
- Ability to monitor and operate navigational aids and communication equipment
- Skills in coordinating with other controllers and airport services
- Proficiency in emergency response and pilot orientation
- Strong decision-making and situational awareness skills
- Effective communication skills with pilots and colleagues
Job Duties
- Make decisions involving order of departures to assure equitable treatment and compliance with center or approach control clearances
- determine times and directions of takeoff and necessary departure turns
- decide whether inbound aircraft land immediately or circle and manage distances to control arrival times
- select active runway and possible simultaneous use of other runways
- plan time and methods for interspersing arrivals and departures with minimal delays
- clear landing and departing aircraft ensuring standard separation on runways
- sequence arriving traffic before traffic pattern to assure safe, orderly flow on final approach
- apply IFR separation standards in limited areas around airport
- sequence VFR and IFR traffic using radar and separate IFR traffic when delegated
- authorize VFR flights through airport traffic area
- determine usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
- monitor navigational aids and control panels including BRITE display
- instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and radar beacon codes
- coordinate with other controllers on arrival and departure movements
- preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more in non-approach terminals
- set up checkpoints to maintain necessary traffic separation
- maintain continuous mental picture and evaluation of changing traffic complex
- maintain continuous radio watch
- handle IFR traffic
- study weather bureau reports and forecasts
- obtain LAWRS/SAWRS weather certification
- observe and report weather conditions
- furnish aircraft with weather and field condition information
- operate light guns, runway lights, field lighting, jet barriers
- orient lost or distressed pilots
- coordinate with operations offices, airport management, fire and ambulance services
- perform lower grade duties as necessary
- provide on-the-job training to others
