This position is with a vital air traffic control facility that operates within a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Air Traffic Control Tower, responsible for ensuring the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic. Job Requirements
- Individual must have a CTO Certificate and a current Class II Medical Certificate
- Position is subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per the DOT/FAA requirements including pre-employment, random, reasonable cause/suspicion, post-accident
- Individual must have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate or FAA Credential with tower rating for minimum six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Ability to work under supervision while performing duties independently
- Must be able to maintain vigilance and focus for extended periods
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to pass medical and background checks
Job Qualifications
- Hold a current Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate
- Possess a Class II Medical Certificate
- Have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate with a facility rating or FAA Credential with a tower rating for at least six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower
- Demonstrate strong communication and decision-making skills
- Experience with visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) traffic control
- Ability to operate and monitor navigational aids and radar equipment
- Knowledge of FAA regulations and air traffic control procedures
- Capacity to coordinate and collaborate with other air traffic controllers and emergency services
- Strong situational awareness and ability to manage complex traffic patterns
- Effective multitasking skills under high-pressure situations
Job Duties
- Make decisions involving the order of departures to ensure equitable treatment of all aircraft and compliance with center clearances
- decide times and directions of takeoff and necessary departure turns
- determine if inbound aircraft should land immediately or circle and manage arrival distances
- select active runway and coordinate simultaneous runway use
- manage arrival and departure interspersion to minimize traffic delay
- clear landing and departing aircraft to use runways with standard separation
- sequence arriving traffic to ensure safe and orderly flow on final approach
- apply IFR separation standards delegated by approach control and center
- sequence VFR and IFR traffic using radar and separate IFR traffic when delegated
- authorize VFR flights through airport traffic area
- assess usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids
- monitor navigational aids and control panels including BRITE display
- instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and radar beacon codes
- coordinate movements of arrival and departure aircraft with other controllers
- preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a five-mile radius when traffic conditions warrant
- set up checkpoints to maintain traffic separation
- maintain situational awareness of dynamic traffic patterns in geographic area
- continuously monitor radio communications with contacted aircraft
- handle IFR traffic responsibility at the airport
- study and utilize weather reports and forecasts to determine their impact on traffic
- provide pilots with information on field conditions, altimeter settings, weather, and navigational aid status
- forward pilot weather reports and weather observations to appropriate agencies
- operate visual aids such as light guns, runway and field lighting, jet barriers
- assist lost or distressed pilots and determine if situation requires coordination with emergency services
- perform lower grade level duties as needed for operational requirements and proficiency maintenance
- provide on-the-job training (OJT) to others
