The role of Assistant Nurse Manager (AHD Assistant Nurse Manager) at Alameda Hospital’s AHD Emergency Department is a critical leadership position within the nursing division. Reporting under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for directing both professional and support nursing personnel. This role involves providing individualized, goal-directed nursing care based on the nursing process and primary nursing principles, in line with the hospital’s policies and procedures. The position is full-time and offers a competitive pay range of $64.99 to $108.31 per hour, reflecting the base pay scale at Alameda Health System, with the final compensation depending on experience, education, licensure, and other factors.

As an Assistant Nurse Manager, the individual plays a pivotal role in managing the clinical nursing staff by addressing performance issues, completing annual performance evaluations, and identifying staff development needs in collaboration with Clinical Nursing Educators. This leadership role also involves assisting with budgetary planning, making recommendations on personnel, supplies, equipment, and other operational needs. The Assistant Nurse Manager develops and conducts quality improvement activities and works to integrate staff feedback into patient care standards and quality assurance programs.

Additionally, the role demands adherence to state and national regulatory standards, ensuring excellence in infection control, quality assurance, continuity of care, patient and staff education, and interdepartmental coordination of care. The Assistant Nurse Manager is also responsible for daily rounding on the unit to assess patient care operations, staff requirements, and patient satisfaction, while managing bed assignments and patient flow. The position requires prioritizing patient care and unit operations, adjusting staffing as necessary, and managing personnel records, time allowances, and payroll.

The ideal candidate for this role will be a graduate of an accredited nursing program, preferably holding a bachelor’s degree in nursing, with a valid RN license to practice in California and certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA). Experience requirements include at least one year as a Clinical Nurse III or three years as a Clinical Nurse II with Alameda Health System, or four years of continuous clinical nursing experience in a large facility. Job Duties

  • Address and evaluate performance issues and applies corrective action as needed
  • assist and complete annual performance evaluations
  • assess and evaluate staff developmental needs and works with Clinical Nursing Educator to provide programs and classes to meet these needs
  • identifies to Nursing Administration those employees with growth potential
  • assists with budgetary process, making recommendations for personnel, supplies, equipment, remodeling and contracts
  • develop and conduct quality improvement studies/activities
  • obtains and incorporates when feasible suggestions and recommendations from staff
  • participates in the determination and implementation of patient care and documentation standards and quality assurance program criteria and monitors the documentation of their achievement
  • performs other duties as required
  • responsible for consistent implementation of the standards set by State and National regulatory and/or accrediting agencies
  • monitors the success and quality of programs providing infection control, quality assurance, continuity of care, patient education, and coordination of care with other departments
  • responsible for daily rounding throughout the unit to evaluate status of patient care operation and environment of the unit, staff needs and patients’ perception of care
  • reports issues as appropriate
  • responsible for effective bed management and patient flow
  • sets and manages priorities for patient care and unit operations and makes adjustments to staffing as necessary
  • contributes to adoption of master staffing schedule to unit schedule
  • maintains approved personnel assignments, time allowance and payroll and personnel records
