About the Role:

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) plays a crucial role in supporting the General Manager in overseeing daily operations on the front-of-house. The AGM is central to driving service standards, enhancing the guest experience, managing staff performance, and ensuring compliance with all company policies and regulations including California wage laws and responsible alcohol service laws. This role involves hands-on leadership and active presence on the floor to maintain smooth service flow and a superior guest experience. A background as a Sommelier combined with mixology skills is highly preferred due to the bistro's emphasis on a well-curated wine list and sophisticated beverage program.

The AGM works collaboratively with the General Manager and Director of Operations to maintain operational excellence and financial performance. They are responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, coaching, and supervising the front-of-house team. The role also demands meticulous adherence to California labor laws, health and safety codes, as well as standards for responsible beverage service. The AGM supports cash handling, POS management, vendor relations, inventory control, and labor cost oversight to optimize business performance.

This position requires a minimum of four years’ experience in hospitality or restaurant management, specifically within an elevated bistro or upscale dining environment. Knowledge of California labor laws and alcohol service regulations is critical, along with strong skills in POS and scheduling software management. The successful candidate will help foster a positive team culture and uphold the reputation of the bistro as a leader in the California dining scene.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years of hospitality or restaurant experience, including supervisory or management responsibility in an elevated bistro-upscale environment
  • Strong knowledge of California labor laws, wage and hour requirements, and responsible alcohol service
  • California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Certification required within 60 days of hire
  • California Food Handler Card required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire
  • ServSafe Manager Certification preferred or to be obtained within 30 days of hire
  • Proficiency with POS systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office

Job Duties

  • Oversee front-of-house operations during shifts, ensuring smooth and efficient service
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise FOH staff in compliance with California wage and hour laws
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping and that non-exempt staff receive required meal and rest breaks
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and documentation in partnership with the General Manager
  • Maintain a visible floor presence to ensure a high level of guest satisfaction with minimal office time during service
  • Resolve guest concerns promptly and professionally, escalating when necessary
  • Uphold service standards and the elevated bistro experience
  • Ensure all alcohol service complies with California ABC laws and Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) requirements
  • Confirm staff maintain valid RBS certification and follow ID verification procedures
  • Manage situations involving intoxicated guests and document incidents
  • Support cash handling, POS management, daily reporting, and labor cost control
  • Assist with ordering, inventory, and vendor coordination for the front of house
  • Ensure compliance with California labor laws, health codes, and Cal/OSHA safety standards
  • Report and document incidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions
