After School Club Coach

J3 Foundation (J3) is a dedicated nonprofit organization focused on addressing the critical issue of literacy among upper elementary students in under-resourced communities. Since its inception in 2018, J3 has been committed to equipping young learners with the essential literacy skills they need to achieve and maintain grade-level reading proficiency. The organization was founded as a response to alarming studies indicating that fourth graders who lag behind in reading face significantly increased risks of incarceration or reliance on public assistance later in life. To combat this, J3 runs targeted reading intervention programs and after-school reading clubs across Los Angeles County, with plans to expand nationally. The foundation’s mission goes beyond teaching reading; it aims to foster positive self-image, boost self-confidence, cultivate a love for reading, and help children build a lifelong identity as readers.

The role of the After School Club Coach at J3 Foundation is an integral part of its educational outreach. This part-time position, based in Los Angeles, focuses on leading after-school literacy and enrichment programs tailored for elementary students at Compton Unified schools. The Club Coach is responsible for creating engaging, supportive, and student-centered reading environments that promote confidence and encourage positive reading habits among children. These sessions, known as Cozy Reading Clubs, run weekly and require the coach to not only manage the club’s logistics and materials but also to nurture a welcoming atmosphere where children feel motivated to participate and grow as readers.

The coach coordinates with families, school staff, and J3 team members to ensure a seamless experience for all participants. Responsibilities include maintaining attendance records, assisting with student enrollment, organizing the J3 library collection, and supporting special events. The position requires approximately 6 to 12 hours per week, with compensation set at $30 per hour. This schedule includes one to two in-person club sessions, weekly virtual meetings, and occasional planning or administrative work. Evening or weekend events may also be part of the role throughout the year. The Club Coach will work on-site at assigned school locations in Los Angeles and must have reliable transportation.

This is a school-year, part-time position with schedules aligned to school calendars and program needs. It involves direct interaction with elementary-aged students and calls for an individual who possesses strong communication and organizational skills, a passion for literacy, and a belief in supporting every student to become a confident reader.
