Job Description

Samuel Merritt University is a distinguished higher education institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and community service. With a strong emphasis on health sciences and professional education, SMU serves a diverse population of students across its four campuses. The university is dedicated to fostering a secure, supportive, and dynamic learning environment where students, faculty, and staff can thrive. SMU continuously strives to enhance its operational infrastructure to support its mission of preparing competent healthcare professionals and leaders in their fields.

The Access Control & Events Coordinator position at Samuel Merritt University plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of campus operations. This full-time, non-exempt role reports directly to the administration and focuses on ensuring secure access, effective event management, and optimized use of university spaces. With an hourly pay range of $27.00 to $30.00, the position offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The coordinator is responsible for the creation, issuance, and maintenance of identification badges for students, faculty, staff, vendors, and visitors across all campuses, ensuring that access permissions are accurately assigned and regularly audited to maintain campus security. This entails collaboration with campus leadership and vendors to manage supply ordering and meet specific programmatic or event-related badging requirements.

In addition to security-related duties, the role encompasses comprehensive event support and space coordination. The coordinator assists with the planning, scheduling, and management of university spaces for diverse functions including internal meetings, academic activities, and external events. By working closely with Media Services and Security teams, the coordinator ensures seamless event execution, proper configuration of event spaces, support during events, and restoration of facilities afterward.

An integral part of the job is delivering high-quality, responsive customer service to event organizers, guests, faculty, and staff, thereby facilitating a professional and welcoming atmosphere throughout the campus. The role requires frequent communication and hands-on involvement, ranging from desk-based tasks to active engagement in security checks, signage posting, and space management.

Ideal candidates for this role have at least a high school diploma or GED, with college coursework preferred, and bring a minimum of four years of experience in high-traffic, customer-oriented, or coordination-heavy environments. Experience in access control systems, camera monitoring, identification badging, event coordination, or facilities operations is favored, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the position.

Physically, the role demands the ability to walk frequently across campus facilities and perform tasks such as lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, kneeling, standing, and pushing or pulling objects as needed. Effective verbal communication and active listening skills are essential for successful interactions with all university stakeholders.

By supporting Samuel Merritt University’s operational excellence, the Access Control & Events Coordinator ensures that security protocols are upheld, events are flawlessly managed, and the campus environment remains safe and conducive to learning and collaboration. This pivotal role contributes to the overarching mission of SMU by guaranteeing that both daily operations and special events contribute positively to the university community.
