This role requires expertise in planning menus, preparing and serving food, and ensuring that all food safety and sanitation standards are met, regardless of whether the team is feeding 25 Soldiers or an entire battalion of 2,500. Food Service Specialists operate, maintain, and clean kitchen and field equipment, performing preventive maintenance on these assets to ensure seamless operation during Army missions.
Working as a Food Service Specialist means you will gain valuable culinary skills such as baking, frying, braising, boiling, simmering, steaming, and sautéing as outlined by standardized Army recipes. You will also learn to order and store food supplies properly and understand dietetic menus, helping to accommodate special nutritional needs. This experience prepares you not only for service in the military but also equips you with transferable skills for civilian culinary careers such as cook, chef, meat cutter, butcher, or baker.
Enlistment in this role includes 10 weeks of Basic Training to instill foundational Soldier skills, followed by nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training that mixes classroom education with practical field exercises. The Army National Guard offers the chance to earn while you learn, with compensation provided during training as well as eligibility for tuition assistance programs. Job Requirements
- Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
- must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or a GED certificate
- must be between the ages of 17 and 35
- must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
- must meet citizenship requirements

- Interest in cooking, home economics, health, mathematics, accounting and chemistry
