Job Description

The Army National Guard is a vital component of the United States military that plays an essential role in national defense as well as providing support during emergencies and natural disasters. Composed of citizen-Soldiers, the Guard combines military service with civilian careers, allowing individuals to serve their country while pursuing personal and professional goals. The Army National Guard is committed to offering high-quality training, benefits, and career opportunities to its members. It is recognized for its dedication to excellence, resilience, and the development of valuable skills that extend into civilian professions. Joining the Guard means joining a community committed to protecting the nation and supporting local communities.

The Food Service Specialist position within the Army National Guard is a critical role responsible for sustaining fellow Soldiers with nutritious and well-prepared meals. This role involves more than just cooking – it requires knowledge and skills in menu planning, food preparation, and sanitation, ensuring that Soldiers are fueled and ready to face physical and mental challenges. This employment opportunity involves both field and fixed-facility food service duties where the number of meals prepared can range from 25 to as many as 2,500. The position offers on-the-job training starting with 10 weeks of Basic Training, followed by nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), where candidates gain expertise in food service operations both in classroom settings and practical field environments.

This is a unique role that blends military discipline with culinary arts, making it an excellent fit for individuals interested in cooking, health, nutrition, and management. Skills learned as a Food Service Specialist are directly transferable to civilian careers such as cooks, chefs, butchers, meat cutters, bakers, and managers of dining facilities. The role also offers educational benefits including tuition assistance and access to the Montgomery GI Bill, making it a financially sustainable career path for many. Pay is provided throughout training and service, with monthly paychecks and additional bonuses available in some cases. The position benefits from a comprehensive package including low-cost life insurance, healthcare benefits, retirement benefits for part-time service, and a 401(k)-type savings plan, offering secure long-term financial planning for Guardsmen.
