This role involves learning and applying a wide array of culinary skills including baking, frying, braising, boiling, simmering, steaming, and sautéing using Army-standard recipes. Food Service Specialists also operate, maintain, and clean field kitchen equipment and perform regular preventive maintenance on kitchen hardware to ensure smooth food preparation operations. They receive comprehensive training in menu planning, food and supply ordering, as well as proper storage techniques for perishable items including meats and poultry.
The position requires interest and skills in cooking and home economics, as well as knowledge areas such as health, mathematics, accounting, and chemistry to ensure precise preparation and quality control. With training that includes 10 weeks of Basic Training for fundamental Soldier skills and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training focusing on food service, candidates emerge with valuable expertise adaptable to civilian careers in restaurants, catering, dining services, or food production industries. This training empowers specialists to pursue various culinary roles such as cook, chef, meat cutter, butcher, or baker.

Job Requirements
- Military enlistment in the Army National Guard
- must be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or a GED certificate
- must be between the ages of 17 and 35
- must be able to pass a physical exam and meet legal and moral standards
- must meet citizenship requirements
