The Lead Employee role at FedEx Freight is a pivotal leadership position focused on supervising and guiding teams to ensure shipments are moved punctually, damage-free, and in line with company standards. This role requires managing daily operational schedules, enforcing safety compliance, and fostering a culture of quality and accountability. The Lead Employee serves not only as a manager but also as a mentor and coach, responsible for developing employees' skills, engagement, and career growth within the company. Acting as a liaison between management and frontline personnel, the Lead Employee ensures that communication is clear and seamless, directing workflow and troubleshooting challenges proactively.

Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing pre-shift meetings, monitoring freight movement, and ensuring adherence to all laws and regulations such as DOT rules and OSHA requirements. The individual in this role must be adept at analyzing performance data to identify cost-saving and efficiency improvements while maintaining a rigorous safety focus. The Lead Employee also plays a significant part in customer interaction by assisting with rate quotes, claims, and appointment scheduling. This position demands excellent organizational and multitasking abilities, strong interpersonal communication skills, and proficiency in using Microsoft Office and internet tools to support administrative duties.

Working conditions often involve a dock environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and exhaust fumes. Flexibility in work hours is essential to meet operational demands in a fast-paced, deadline-driven atmosphere. Job Qualifications

  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent
  • Good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of LTL Industry, DOT rules and regulations, OSHA laws, Hazardous Materials Regulations, NMFC and Tariff rules, as well as company policies and procedures preferred
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Multi-task oriented and possess good organizational skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Internet

Job Duties

  • Lead, manage, educate and develop company employees focusing on retention and growth
  • Supervise and direct employee work including pre-shifts with a focus on outstanding quality, customer deliverables and safety performance identifying and overseeing improvement
  • Actively monitor, record and educate employees regarding unsafe acts/conditions correcting immediately using corrective action as need
  • Provide feedback and follow-up with all impacted employees
  • Plan daily manpower needs and set schedules to ensure customers’ freight is delivered and picked-up timely and damage free
  • Communicate job assignments coordinating with all employees ensuring direction is clear and concise
  • Monitor service freight and ensure cut time compliance
  • Monitor, analyze and address all opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiencies while maintaining rigorous safety standards
  • Assist customers with rate quotes, claim information and setting appointments
  • Monitor actual performance data and gather information for reporting
  • Build relationships and positive communications with all business partners to ensure customers’ and company’s service standards are met
  • Identify freight moving at incorrect weight and classification
  • Ensure all OS&D is identified and processed properly
  • Perform administrative functions as required
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required
