Job Description

Bend-La Pine Schools is a respected educational organization located in Bend, Oregon. As a prominent public school district, Bend-La Pine Schools is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment. The organization places a strong emphasis on equity, which goes beyond mere equality by actively removing barriers and promoting inclusive practices so that all students, regardless of their background, can fully benefit from educational opportunities. Their policies, programs, and resource allocations are designed to uphold this commitment to equity. The district is known for its dedication to creating a supportive and diverse workplace, encouraging candidates from various backgrounds to apply, even if they do not meet every qualification listed in the job description.

The role available within Bend-La Pine Schools is Nutrition Services I - Server, positioned in the Nutrition Services department and reporting directly to the Nutrition Services Supervisor. This role is focused on supporting the food service operations within the school environment. The Nutrition Services I - Server is responsible for several critical functions including food preparation, serving meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and managing meal counts and deposits. This position works under direct supervision and handles routine tasks, escalating any complex issues to higher-level technicians or management.

The job requires a hands-on approach to food service, involving cooking, cleaning, and customer interaction with students and school staff. The employee may also be responsible for processing free and reduced meal applications, collecting money, operating meal software, and selling ala carte or snack bar items. In addition to these duties, the server may assist with opening and closing kitchen operations, supervising student helpers, ensuring proper storage of food supplies and equipment, and maintaining an orderly kitchen environment.

Working conditions include a fast-paced kitchen and cafeteria environment where employees are required to stand for long periods, perform repetitive motions, and manage physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and carrying. The role involves exposure to hot surfaces, sharp tools, cleaning chemicals, and varying temperatures, necessitating adherence to strict safety and sanitation guidelines as per USDA regulations. Regular interaction with students during meal times is an integral part of the job, requiring attentiveness and the ability to supervise effectively in potentially noisy settings.

The position requires a basic educational qualification equivalent to a high school diploma or GED, with minimal on-the-job training since the duties are straightforward and repetitive. Certification in food handling, such as the Oregon Food Handler's Permit or ServSafe certification, is necessary to fulfill the role's requirements. Bend-La Pine Schools prioritize professionalism and expect their employees to embody the core values of public education by maintaining punctuality, appropriate attire, and respectful communication with all stakeholders. The job offers a stable annualized pay that includes summer months and represents an opportunity to contribute to a supportive and equity-focused educational community. Being a part of the Oregon School Employees Association, Chapter No. 6, the position reflects a commitment to quality service in public education nutrition programs.
