Job Description

Seattle Colleges is a leading educational institution in the state of Washington, comprising a district of three distinct colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College, and South Seattle College, along with five specialty training centers. This makes it the largest and most diverse community college district in the state. The colleges are renowned for being at the forefront of change and innovation in education. The institution is deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, actively working against systemic racism. Seattle Colleges provides an open-access learning environment dedicated to preparing students for success in life and work. It also fosters a diverse, engaged, and dynamic community where staff and faculty contribute meaningfully to student support and learning.

At South Seattle College, the Culinary and Pastry Arts program is distinguished by blending classical culinary techniques with modern innovations. Students benefit from learning in award-winning kitchens and hands-on experiences such as operating a food truck. The program is led by experienced chef-instructors who bring decades of real-world knowledge and expertise. Students gain practical exposure in everything from savory entrées to delicate pastries, competing and achieving recognition at state and national levels.

This position is for a part-time faculty member specializing as an intermediate culinary arts and pastry instructor. The role requires a balance of solid culinary and baking knowledge, with an emphasis on effective communication, student engagement, and instructional skills. The successful candidate will be a vital member of the Culinary Arts Program team, collaborating closely with instructors, students, and administrative leadership such as the Dean. Faculty members are expected to organize both practical and theoretical instruction in culinary arts, focusing on technique, terminology, safety, sanitation, and industry standards.

As part of the role, the instructor will plan and guide student work in various learning environments to ensure competency development in line with curriculum outlines. Duties include measuring and assessing course and program outcomes, grading assignments and exams, enforcing program policies related to attendance and dress code, and maintaining compliance with health department regulations regarding food safety and sanitation.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with AFT-Seattle, offering a salary range from $7,703 to $11,537.33 for part-time faculty, with pay adjusted based on course credits. Applicants are encouraged to submit a resume, cover letter addressing the intersection of their background with the job, and three professional references. The hiring process includes virtual interviews conducted via video conferencing platforms.

The position emphasizes an equity-focused open-access educational philosophy, aiming to help students from diverse backgrounds achieve their academic and professional goals. Seattle Colleges promotes continuous professional development and inclusive participation in committees, workgroups, and affinity groups. The role also requires adherence to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations to foster an accessible and supportive workplace environment. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, as the employer does not sponsor work visas. The selection process includes a criminal background check and compliance with state sexual misconduct disclosure requirements.
