Job Description

Federal Way School District is committed to providing high-quality nutritional services to its students, recognizing the vital role that healthy meals play in student success and well-being. The Nutrition Services Department actively works to ensure that meals served to students in secondary schools are nutritious, safe, and served in an environment that promotes positive experiences around meal times. The district prioritizes collaboration, quality service, and compliance with health and safety standards across all its schools. The Secondary Kitchen Manager position plays a critical role in this mission by overseeing the effective delivery of meal services within secondary school kitchens. The Federal Way School District values diversity and inclusiveness and aims to foster a workplace that supports cultural competence and equitable treatment of all staff and students. This position operates under the Public School Employees Union (PSE) SEIU Local 1948 with compensation in Level C of the Nutrition Services Department's salary schedule, including prorated benefits such as medical, dental, vision, sick and vacation leave, life insurance, and retirement.

The Secondary Kitchen Manager is responsible for the timely, safe, and sanitary meal production and service in assigned secondary schools within the Federal Way School District. This role requires a strong leader who can efficiently assign duties, supervise kitchen staff, and ensure the delivery of high-quality meals in an attractive and welcoming environment. The manager acts as a role model for school kitchen assistants and student helpers, promoting a positive, friendly, and efficient meal service. A key part of the role is to promote the school lunch program through advertising and in-school promotions and to coordinate meal service with school activities and goals. This position requires effective collaboration with building representatives and district supervisors to address student concerns and quality standards.

Operational duties include the use of Point of Sale (POS) systems for meal transactions, maintaining and operating kitchen equipment, and processing free and reduced meal applications in accordance with department protocols. The Secondary Kitchen Manager is accountable for meal and cash reporting accuracy and adherence to the National School Lunch Program guidelines. The role involves maintaining signage and non-food displays for promotions and ensuring that the kitchen environment is clean, safe, and well-maintained. The position requires hands-on involvement in food preparation, serving, and cleanup activities, along with strict observance of safety and sanitation standards.

Furthermore, this role demands physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy weights regularly, work in variable temperature environments, and manage interactions with a diverse school community. The manager must maintain confidentiality, demonstrate professionalism, and promote teamwork among staff.
