This job opportunity is for a Commercial Driver at FedEx Freight, where the primary responsibility includes the pickup and delivery of freight between service centers and customers to support the company's selling process. The starting rate of pay for this position is $31.93 per hour, and depending on assignment and qualifications, pay can reach up to $36.97 per hour. Drivers assigned to linehaul duties can also earn mileage pay ranging from $0.7342 to $0.8498 per mile, plus fixed pay for certain linehaul-related tasks based on a fraction of the hourly rate. The Commercial Driver operates tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and triples where applicable, along with straight trucks. Responsibilities include performing daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment, handling freight securely, and using appropriate motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks. Drivers are required to hook and unhook trailers, secure freight inside trailers, recap or repair damaged freight, and ensure all necessary documentation is complete and compliant with regulations, including those involving hazardous materials.

This role emphasizes strong communication skills, requiring drivers to coordinate with dispatch and customers, solicit additional business, and ensure superior internal and external customer service. Drivers may occasionally perform chaining of vehicle tires or assist with duties of a road driver or dock employee as necessary. Stringent adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, company policies, and safety procedures is mandatory.

FedEx Freight places importance on driver qualifications that include possession of a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements (with an automatic transmission restriction permitted). Additionally, candidates must have at least one year of recent experience or have completed the FedEx Freight Driver Development Course. Maintaining an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and meeting specific DOT regulatory requirements are also prerequisites.

The workplace environment exposes drivers to varying road conditions, weather, noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and hazardous materials shipped under DOT regulations. The role demands physical capability to lift freight items weighing up to 100 pounds several times weekly, as well as the ability to remain seated for extended periods and perform physical activities such as bending, twisting, and climbing in and out of trucks.
