The role of Freight Driver at FedEx Freight is critical to the company's mission to deliver freight safely and efficiently between service centers and customers. The starting rate for this position is $31.93 per hour, reflecting the company's recognition of the skill and responsibility involved. This role primarily involves operating tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and triples, as well as straight trucks, to transport freight. The Freight Driver will perform essential safety inspections, handle freight with appropriate motorized and manual equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks, and ensure secure loading practices. An important part of the job also includes documenting deliveries, handling cash or check freight charges when necessary, and maintaining communication with dispatch and customers to optimize service delivery and solicit additional business.

Beyond transportation duties, the Freight Driver will comply with all Federal Motor Carrier regulations, hazardous material handling protocols, and company policies. The role requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with necessary endorsements, a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), and the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting freight weighing up to 100 pounds and operating equipment in various weather conditions and environments. Drivers must also be comfortable conducting vehicle tire chaining when necessary and potentially performing duties of road drivers or dock employees to meet operational needs. Job Requirements

  • Minimum of one year relevant experience within last three years or completion of driver development course
  • Possess valid Class A commercial driver’s license with necessary endorsements
  • Maintain acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Meet department of transportation regulatory requirements
  • Ability to perform physical demands including lifting up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Must obtain hazardous materials endorsement within 120 days of hire
  • Ability to work varied hours as operational needs demand
  • Ability to operate long combination vehicles in designated states
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Job Qualifications

  • Possess a class A commercial driver’s license with double/triple hazardous materials and tank endorsements
  • One year experience within last three years or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course
  • Possess acceptable motor vehicle record based on hiring standards
  • Meet all department of transportation regulatory requirements under section 391 of the federal motor carrier regulations
  • Ability to count and perform basic math with or without calculator
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to sit bend twist squat climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

Job Duties

  • Operate tractor-trailer combination including doubles and/or straight trucks
  • Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment
  • Secure freight inside trailers using pallets straps and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
  • Collect cash or checks for freight charges and maintain documentation
  • Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch including delays arrivals and equipment problems
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Ask for additional business from customers and provide leads to sales
  • Perform chaining of vehicle tires when required
  • Perform job duties of road driver or dock employee where necessary
  • Comply with all applicable laws regulations company policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as required
