The Pastry Chef role within this grocery company is a vital position responsible for supporting the prepared foods operation under the guidance of the Executive Chef. In addition to hands-on production duties, the Pastry Chef collaborates in menu planning and development, pushing the boundaries with new trends and recipe experimentation to enhance the bakery selections. This position involves working closely with the Catering Director and Executive Chef to develop catering menus that align with profitability goals, diversity, and high-quality expectations.

The role also includes inventory management responsibilities such as ordering, controlling out-of-stock items, monitoring shrinkage, and maintaining equipment safety. Furthermore, the Pastry Chef engages directly with customers, providing excellent service and handling cash transactions accurately at the point of sale. The employee should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, requiring physical stamina for standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and other physical activities.

Job Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a pastry chef or baker
  • knowledge of baking techniques and ingredients
  • strong understanding of food safety and sanitation standards
  • creativity and ability to experiment with recipes
  • good communication and teamwork skills
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • experience with inventory management and ordering
  • familiarity with catering menu development
  • competence in cash handling and register operations

Job Duties

  • Responsible for production, ordering, merchandising, achieving goals on sales and profits, controlling inventory and out of stocks, sanitation, shrink, supplies, equipment, and safety
  • assist with menu planning and development including creativity and experimentation with new trends and menu ideas and recipes to create AJ's exclusive pastries and expand the offerings in our boulangeries
  • ensure compliance with health department and weights and measures requirements
  • maintain open communication with all members of the kitchen and department manager
  • work with the Catering Director and Executive Chef on menu planning and facilitating the production of catering menus to ensure profitability, variety and AJ's quality standards
  • maintain a high degree of cleanliness throughout preparation area
  • correctly operate a cash register including proper cash handling and all forms of tender per company policy
  • perform all other related duties as assigned
