Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) is a United Kingdom Ministry of Defence research facility responsible for the design, manufacture, and support of warheads for the UK's nuclear weapons. Established in 1987, AWE is the successor to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) and operates primarily from its main site at Aldermaston, Berkshire, England.

AWE's primary mission is to ensure the safety, security, and effectiveness of the UK's nuclear deterrent. This involves maintaining the warheads for the Trident nuclear deterrent, developing capabilities to design new weapons if required, and dismantling and disposing of redundant warheads.

Additionally, AWE contributes to international arms limitation treaties by developing the necessary skills, technologies, and techniques.

The facility's operations are extensive and multifaceted, encompassing a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. AWE employs approximately 4,500 staff and over 2,000 contractors, including scientists, engineers, technicians, and safety specialists.

These professionals work collaboratively to uphold the UK's nuclear capabilities and ensure compliance with international standards.

In addition to its core responsibilities, AWE plays a significant role in nuclear non-proliferation and arms control. The establishment collaborates with international partners to monitor and verify nuclear activities, contributing to global efforts in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

AWE's expertise is also utilized in supporting the UK's response to nuclear and radiological threats, including the detection and rendering safe of improvised nuclear devices.
