Nightclubs often have large crowds, especially during weekends and holidays. This makes it important to include in your Bartender resume a summary of your experience in handling a great volume of people.

Emphasizing upselling achievements also makes this resume effective since nightclubs often expect Bartenders to recommend premium drinks to meet sales targets.

This resume is well-suited for applying to similar establishments like bars, beer gardens and lounges, where serving alcohol is the Bartender’s main responsibility.

4 Steps To Make the Best Bartender Resume

Since most Bartender employers prioritize experience and skills over formal qualifications, it’s important to ensure your resume showcases your capabilities in a clear and simple way

Below, we’ve outlined the steps to create an effective resume.

Step 1: Add your contact information

Your contact information segment should include your mobile number, email address and the state and city where you live. Your email address should be professional, ideally just stating your first and last name.

Step 2: Decide between writing a professional summary or objective

What’s the difference, you ask? A professional summary is a snapshot of you as a Bartender. It states how many years of experience you have, any specializations and your biggest accomplishments.

Here’s an example:

Sample: Bartender resume summary

Experienced Bartender with over five years of experience in high-volume bars and upscale dining establishments. Specializing in craft cocktails, premium spirits and providing personalized drink recommendations to enhance guest experiences. Successfully increased beverage sales by 20% in my previous role by introducing innovative seasonal drink menus and upselling premium products.

An objective is similar to a summary, the only difference is that it includes a sentence that states what you aim to achieve by applying for the role. The advantage of using an objective over a summary is that you can customize it for the establishment, showing your enthusiasm for the role through due diligence.

Below is an example for reference.

Sample: Bartender resume objective

Skilled Bartender with ten years of experience in creating craft cocktails and delivering exceptional guest experiences. Eager to join the team at [Establishment Name] for its commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and innovative drink offerings, which aligns with my personal values and experience in crafting seasonal, fresh cocktails.

Step 3: Identify skills you need to highlight

We’ve compiled common skills included in Bartender resumes and categorized them into soft and hard skills.

Choose Bartender resume skills that are appropriate for the establishment you’re applying to and match your skill level.

Bartender hard skills:

  • Knowledge of a variety of drink recipes, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Responsible service of alcohol standards
  • Basic mixology
  • Advanced mixology
  • Inventory management
  • Drink menu creation
  • Cocktail presentation
  • Bar equipment operation
  • Upselling techniques
  • Cost control
  • Cash handling
  • Quality control
  • Financial reporting

Bartender soft skills:

  • Customer service
  • Cleanliness and organization
  • Adaptable
  • Staff management
  • High-volume service
  • Conflict resolution
  • Time management
  • Multi-tasking
  • Shift management

Step 4: Show your impact at your previous jobs

Demonstrate how you’ve been an excellent Bartender by using numbers and results to show your impact, rather than just listing your duties.

Here’s an example:

Advice From a Renowned Restaurant Consultant

OysterLink recently had the pleasure of interviewing Emily LaRuffa, a hospitality professional with over 20 years of professional bar, restaurant and hotel experience.

We asked her what skills she values the most when assessing a resume, and this was her answer.

What are the most important skills you look for on a hospitality employee’s resume?

Emily: “It is essential to mention that everything in hospitality is a transferable skill. This often gets overlooked but I believe that it should be kept on top of our minds at all times.

One of the most important things to me is the willingness to learn. Effective communication plays a huge role. A big part of it is listening and knowing how to read a room.

This is a stressful industry so you must learn how to communicate with team members, managers and guests. You also need to learn to stand up for yourself and voice your opinion, especially if you want to explore leadership positions.”

Emily LaRuffa, Restaurant Consultant and owner of Oracle Hospitality

Tips: What Makes a Killer Bartender Resume?

An outstanding resume is one tailored to the establishment’s unique demands, looks professional and is error-free. Below are tips to help you achieve these goals.

Plain or colored Bartender resume?

Choose plain resumes when applying for upscale establishments or senior roles, such as Fine Dining Bartenders, Hotel Bartenders and Head Bartenders.

A splash of color can be acceptable for more casual places like nightclubs, but don’t overdo it.

Use up to two colors in the same hue.

When in doubt, stick with plain resumes.

Photo or no photo on your Bartender resume?

Many experts recommend forgoing a headshot on a Bartender resume. What they suggest is going there yourself to hand over your resume.

Recruiters do a background check through your LinkedIn or social media accounts anyway, so they’ll see what you look like.

In the U.S., including a photo on your resume isn’t recommended due to antidiscrimination laws that prohibit decisions based on someone’s race, color, age and sex.

Therefore, skip adding a photo on your resume unless specifically requested in the job ad.

To include other jobs or not?

It’s generally recommended to include other jobs you’ve had, even if they’re not in bartending.

As long as you carefully select transferable skills and responsibilities that are relevant for Bartenders, this can be beneficial.

For instance, if you worked as a Server, emphasize duties such as interacting with customers, handling payments and dealing with complaints.
