Job Description
Church at the Park is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals facing homelessness and poverty by providing essential services and fostering community leadership. Known for its innovative programs, this establishment operates a commercial kitchen that doubles as a high-functioning food service operation and a hands-on training environment for young adults experiencing barriers to employment. With a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, Church at the Park promotes a culture of dignity and belonging to help participants rebuild their lives and achieve sustainable independence. The organization is located in Oregon and operates Monday through Friday, providing a stable work schedule along with a competitive salary starting at $68,510 per year, which may increase based on experience (DOE) and qualifications (DOQ). Comprehensive benefits include medical, dental, vision, voluntary life insurance, and a generous paid time off policy.
The Workforce Development Chef role is pivotal in executing the organization’s mission by leading the commercial kitchen’s dual purpose as both a culinary operation and a training space. This leadership position involves overseeing daily kitchen operations, maintaining the highest standards for food safety and quality, and managing food production, menu planning, and service workflows in a fast-paced, training-focused environment. In addition to kitchen management, the Workforce Development Chef functions as the primary culinary instructor, delivering structured, hands-on training designed around curriculum objectives to equip young adults with transferable job skills, workplace habits, and professional standards. Coaching, mentoring, and supporting participants in a trauma-informed and respectful environment is a core aspect of this role.
Beyond direct instruction, this position requires the ability to track and document participant progress and collaborate closely with the Workforce Development Program Manager to continuously refine curriculum and training materials. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of commercial food service experience, hands-on experience in training or mentoring others, and relevant culinary qualifications such as a culinary certificate or apprenticeship completion. Certifications like a current Food Handler Card and SERV Safe Manager Certification, or their timely acquisition, are essential. Additionally, a valid Oregon driver’s license is required to meet insurance policies and potential travel needs.
Candidates with experience operating a training kitchen or culinary workforce development program, working with young adults facing employment barriers, and training in trauma-informed care or workforce coaching are preferred. Bilingual or multilingual abilities that reflect the communities served are an asset. The role demands a physical capacity to manage the rigors of a commercial kitchen environment, including standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to heat, cleaning chemicals, and sharp tools. Flexibility to work outside of regular hours may be required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
Church at the Park offers a unique opportunity for culinary professionals to combine their passion for food with social impact, contributing directly to community upliftment and participant transformation. As part of a dynamic, mission-focused team, the Workforce Development Chef not only hones culinary expertise but also plays a critical role in shaping the lives of vulnerable individuals, fostering self-sufficiency, and supporting ongoing program development. This role epitomizes the organization’s core values of love, acceptance, and empowerment, encouraging a compassionate, outward mindset and respectful communication. Join Church at the Park to make a meaningful difference while advancing your culinary career with purpose and heart.
