Job Description

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Pub, located within the Wood Center on the UAF campus, is a vibrant and essential part of the university community. As a hub for social engagement and campus activities, the Pub provides a lively, welcoming space where students and staff come together to enjoy events such as live music nights, game days, and campus celebrations. The Pub is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere that enhances the overall university experience. The establishment values creating fun and memorable experiences that build community connections and contribute to the thriving culture at UAF, making it an attractive workplace for those passionate about service and social interaction.

The Pub Bartender role at UAF is more than just serving drinks; it is about being an integral member of the team charged with creating an engaging and enjoyable environment for the entire campus. Responsibilities include preparing and serving beverages, enforcing state laws and university policies regarding alcohol service, and ensuring the Pub operates smoothly while maintaining a safe and welcoming space. The position is classified as a Student Assistant 2 role with a starting pay of $15.50 per hour plus tips, offering student employees an opportunity to gain valuable work experience while contributing to the university community. Bartenders must be at least 21 years old and willing to work evening and weekend shifts to accommodate the Pub’s event schedule.

Additional roles within the Pub team include the Pub Attendant and Pub Sound Technician positions. Pub Attendants are responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of the Pub, including handling money responsibly, assisting with program planning and execution, and communicating effectively with patrons while upholding state alcohol laws and university policies. Pub Sound Technicians focus on managing live sound reinforcement systems during events, with training provided to enhance technical skills. Prior experience in live sound is preferred but not required, and ongoing training ensures staff remain proficient with the Pub's sound equipment.

Applicants for these roles must be enrolled in the University of Alaska system as students taking at least six credits per semester, with a minimum GPA of 2.0, or be newly enrolled students. Additionally, candidates are required to obtain a current alcohol server’s education course certificate (TAPS) and an Alaska Food Worker card, either prior to or during their first shift. The Pub offers support with certification costs, demonstrating the university's commitment to employee development and compliance with regulatory standards.

Overall, working at the UAF Pub represents a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic team that plays a key role in campus life, delivering exceptional service and enhancing the student experience. Employees benefit from a supportive work environment, professional training, and the chance to build meaningful relationships within the UAF community while developing skills in customer service, event coordination, and technical sound operation.
