The Group Leader role in the Richmond, VA laboratory represents a critical leadership position within this dynamic company. Employees in this role assist with multiple projects, engage extensively with multi-disciplinary staff, regulatory agencies, and clients, and work within a strong team of committed professionals. This position offers a competitive salary range of $55,000 to $65,000 annually, complemented by an annual bonus based on experience, skills, and geographic location. Scheduled Monday through Friday, the role blends hands-on scientific work with personnel management and operational oversight. The Group Leader is responsible for supervising staff, scheduling projects with a focus on rush and short hold samples, maintaining and repairing laboratory instruments, troubleshooting various issues, and ensuring compliance with rigorous quality and safety standards. They play a pivotal role in method development, SOP updates, and efficiency improvements, fostering an environment that values accuracy, communication, and teamwork. Working with concentrated acids requires stringent safety practices, which the Group Leader enforces diligently in addition to supporting personnel skills development, team building, and conflict resolution. This role is integral to the lab's success and directly impacts the quality of environmental data that supports sustainable decision-making.
The working environment involves a blend of laboratory bench work and office-based functions when not deployed on emergency responses. Physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasional overhead lifting over 20 pounds. Occasionally, extended shifts of up to 12 hours may be required, along with potential exposure to varying temperature environments. Job Requirements
- Bachelor degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or equivalent
- Minimum of 3-4 years laboratory experience in a commercial production laboratory
- Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry methods
- Proven leadership and team management skills
- Effective communication and organizational abilities
- Ability to work with concentrated acids safely
- Capability to manage multiple projects and schedules
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in varied environments
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or equivalent
- Minimum of 3-4 years laboratory experience
- Group Leaders must be well versed in most methods within their department
- Ability to organize, communicate, and facilitate priorities to staff effectively
- Ability to handle non-routine samples and manage effective workflow including man-hours, machine time and logistics
Job Duties
- Preparation of various sample matrices using pH meters, titration techniques, analytical balances and other support equipment
- Analyze various client-provided sample matrices using gravimetric analysis, flow analyzers, UV-VIS technologies, extraction processes, and IC
- Personnel supervision, time management, and operational efficiency
- Conflict resolution and personnel skills development, team building and conflict resolution
- Accurate and timely communication with internal staff and management
- Project scheduling, focus on rush and short hold sample preparation and analysis
- Perform instrument maintenance and repair
- Troubleshooting and problem solving
- Prepare calibration standards and calibrate instruments
- Maintain inventory of standards and supplies
- order replacements as needed
- Development of analytical methods
- Write and assist with updating related SOPs
- Overhead projects designed to improve efficiency or accuracy of analyses
- Peer review other analysts' data packages, data entry, sequences, bench books, etc.
- Comply with Quality Assurance Program and other policies
- Ensure staff comply with Health and Safety Plan, particularly with concentrated acids and instructing proper handling and safety procedures
