Job Description

The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is a dedicated state agency committed to serving veterans and their families across Washington. WDVA stands as a national leader advocating for nearly 500,000 veterans, connecting them to earned benefits and innovative health and wellness programs designed to improve their quality of life. The department operates four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These homes specialize in providing Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to veterans, and in some cases, to their spouses, widows, or Gold Star families. The Spokane Veterans Home, where this position is based, is a 24/7 facility that offers professional care and a supportive community environment for its residents. The home values commitment, service, and the well-being of America’s heroes, aligning with the core mission of WDVA: "Serving Those Who Served." This particular opportunity is a part-time, permanent role and includes a hands-on work schedule from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday. The position is not eligible for telework due to the onsite service nature required at the Spokane facility.

As a Food Service Worker at the Spokane Veterans Home, you will play a crucial role in the daily operations relating to meal distribution and food service. Your responsibilities will focus on ensuring the safe and sanitary delivery of meals that meet the nutritional needs and therapeutic diet requirements of the home's elderly and veteran residents. You will contribute directly to the residents’ wellbeing by adhering to food safety standards and helping create a caring environment through exceptional customer service. This role is ideal for those interested in starting or advancing their career in state service within a meaningful and supportive setting. There is an emphasis on teamwork, dependability, and effective communication as you will work closely with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds.

The Food Service Worker will be involved in various aspects of food preparation, serving hot and cold meals following therapeutic diet instructions, and ensuring food safety compliance. You will also assist with cleaning, sanitizing equipment, and maintaining hygiene standards throughout the food serving and preparation areas. Physical requirements are part of the job, including handling food containers and equipment that may weigh up to 60 pounds.

Working at WDVA not only offers a chance to cultivate your culinary skills and customer service abilities but also rewards you with a competitive pay scale that includes a supplemental basic shift premium for working in a 24/7 direct-care facility. This premium adds an additional dollar per hour on top of the basic shift premium for eligible hours worked, making this an attractive option for those seeking both meaningful work and fair compensation.

Joining WDVA means becoming part of a diverse, inclusive, and award-winning workplace that honors and respects all employees regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. The department encourages applicants who are passionate about serving veterans and their families and who seek a stable, supportive, and mission-driven work environment. A focus on continuous learning, employee growth, and community impact defines the culture at WDVA and the Spokane Veterans Home. If you meet the qualifications and want to contribute positively to the lives of veterans by ensuring their nutritional needs are handled with care and professionalism, this Food Service Worker role is an excellent opportunity to consider.
