Job Description

The City of Burlington is a progressive and inclusive municipal government committed to providing outstanding public services to its residents and visitors. Known for its dedication to sustainability, community development, and cultural vibrancy, Burlington offers a dynamic workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion at every level. The city embraces the principles of equitable governance and actively fosters a workforce that mirrors the diverse population it serves. As an equal opportunity employer, Burlington ensures that all employees and applicants are treated with respect and fairness regardless of their background or identity. This commitment to equality extends across gender, race, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability, and all other protected classes, making the City of Burlington not only a place of employment but a community that cultivates belonging and empowerment for all its team members.

This job opportunity is housed within the city’s Waterfront Division, a vital segment of Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront (BPRW) dedicated to managing event venues and recreational spaces along the waterfront and within city parks. This division encompasses an array of responsibilities from site maintenance to event management, hosting a diverse range of activities such as large-scale concerts, festivals, community gatherings, and seasonal events. The Waterfront Division operates with a focus on enhancing public enjoyment of the waterfront and green spaces while maintaining the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and environmental stewardship.

The position of Event Operations and Maintenance Coordinator is a crucial role in supporting both internally and externally produced events throughout BPRW facilities and grounds. Reporting directly to the Marina Manager and collaborating closely with the Facilities Maintenance Specialist and marina staff, the coordinator ensures seamless event execution through site operations and maintenance. This role requires a candidate who is versatile, self-motivated, and capable of both independent work and team collaboration tailored to fluctuating event demands.

The hourly wage for this non-union position ranges from $19.15 to $22.17, reflecting the city’s commitment to fair compensation. While this job requires on-site presence given the nature of event and grounds operations, it is categorized as Remote Tier 1 with zero days allowed remote per week, emphasizing the hands-on nature of the work.

Key responsibilities for the role include assistance with event set-up and break down that involves physical tasks such as snow fence installation and removal, marking water lines, transporting equipment, and installing temporary signage. The coordinator supports event operations by taking sound readings, addressing public inquiries, and promptly reporting concerns to supervisory staff. Ensuring exceptional customer service in a public-facing environment is paramount, alongside maintaining clean and well-kept facilities, including restrooms and park grounds.

Additional duties involve upkeep of turf and landscaping through mowing, weed whacking, seeding, and mulching, as well as litter collection and graffiti removal to uphold the aesthetic and safety standards of the parks. The role demands flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as events often occur outside regular business hours. As a park advocate, the coordinator plays an essential role in observing and reporting any undesirable activities or maintenance issues to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Furthermore, the opportunity allows for active participation in popular City of Burlington events such as the July 3rd celebration and Beach Bites, supporting both operational and guest experience elements. By working within a team dedicated to community engagement and environmental respect, the Event Operations and Maintenance Coordinator contributes directly to Burlington’s mission of fostering vibrant public spaces where people can connect and celebrate nature and culture alike.

This position not only provides meaningful work with tangible community impact but also offers a platform for individuals passionate about event production, park maintenance, and public service to develop and apply their skills in a supportive and equitable environment. With a strong organizational culture that honors diversity and inclusivity, Burlington welcomes candidates who can bring unique perspectives and a committed work ethic to help enhance the city's waterfront and park experiences.
