Job Description
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 as the dedicated partner to the National Park Service in managing and supporting the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). This expansive park area spans three counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, encompassing renowned landmarks such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands' End, and the Presidio of San Francisco. The Parks Conservancy works collaboratively with government agencies, local communities, and donors to enhance these treasured sites and ensure their preservation for future generations.
The Conservancy serves not only as stewards of natural beauty and historic landmarks but also as activists in social justice and climate resilience, striving to connect people from diverse backgrounds with the parks through education, volunteerism, and innovative programming. This approach supports their vision of 'Parks for All Forever,' promoting accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement throughout the region.
Within this context, the Visitor Service Representative I role is an integral part of the Visitor Programs and Services Department. This department is responsible for fee-based interpretive programs aimed at enriching visitor experiences within the GGNRA. Central to this department’s offerings is the Alcatraz Cell House Tour, an award-winning audio tour attracting over one million visitors annually. This position is based on Alcatraz Island, a historic and iconic site rich in cultural significance and natural beauty.
The Visitor Service Representative I position is dedicated to ensuring that every visitor to the Alcatraz Cell House has an informative, safe, and enjoyable experience. Representatives manage the distribution and collection of the audio tour equipment, assist visitors in using the devices, and provide detailed information about Alcatraz’s history, programs, and special events. Attention to customer service excellence is paramount, as is the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evening shifts. The role requires a commitment of 32-40 hours per week, with at least one weekend day mandatory for full-time employees.
In addition to direct visitor interaction, this role involves operational responsibilities such as checking audio equipment functionality, charging and sanitizing devices, and monitoring visitor flow to ensure smooth tour progression. The position also emphasizes teamwork and collaboration, requiring adherence to management guidance, prompt attendance, and compliance with organizational policies including health and safety protocols.
Working conditions for this role are unique and dynamic, combining indoor and outdoor environments in a historic setting that includes rustic buildings and exposure to wildlife such as breeding sea birds during certain months. Physical demands include standing or walking for most of the shift, lifting up to 15 pounds, and navigating a moderately steep quarter-mile walk on the island.
This position offers a competitive pay rate of $21 per hour (pay grade 11) and a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits include free medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their families, paid vacation days, holidays, personal and sick leave, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution, an Employee Assistance Program, commuter benefits, and employee discounts. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is committed to equal opportunity employment and promotes a diverse and inclusive workplace. Prospective employees with varied backgrounds and experiences, including those with criminal histories in accordance with local fair chance laws, are encouraged to apply.
