Job Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • previous experience or training/education in veterinary facility preferred
  • dependability with attendance
  • allergies to animals controllable through medication
  • ability to lift 40 pounds
  • willingness to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions
  • ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during minimum 8-hour day
  • visual acuity to maintain records, recognize people, and understand written directions
  • ability to speak and hear to give information in person and over phone
  • fine motor skills adequate for hospital equipment use

Job Duties

  • Assist doctor and other hospital staff by care and cleaning of patients and facilities including completing patient treatments
  • assisting in surgery and all other animal care functions
  • manage appointment days including obtaining patient histories, vitals, medical record keeping, patient invoicing, creating surgical/procedure estimates
  • schedule procedures and rechecks
  • manage surgical days including admitting patients, catheter placement, drug calculations, anesthesia care and monitoring
  • surgical instrument care, OR and machine maintenance
  • assist in nursing care of CCU/ophthalmology post-op surgery patients/hospitalized eye cases and discharge patients
  • perform or assist with diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures including Schirmer tear testing, tonometry, ocular ultrasounds, electroretinogram testing, intraocular pressures, fluorescein stains
  • use and maintain ophthalmology-specific instrumentation and equipment including phacoemulsification surgery equipment, surgical microscopes, ophthalmic lasers
  • prepare, administer and dispense prescriptions, both topical eye meds and oral medication
  • organize, clean, stock, and prepare treatment rooms for examination
  • hold or restrain animals during examination or treatment
  • handle holidays and on call hours based on hospital needs
  • cross-train for front office receptionist duties including telephone and computer skills
