Job Description

St. John's Riverside Hospital is a leading healthcare institution dedicated to providing high quality, compassionate medical care through the use of the latest state-of-the-art technology. Serving the Westchester community including Yonkers and nearby river town communities such as Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, and Irvington, St. John's Riverside Hospital has built a strong reputation as a comprehensive network of medical professionals committed to service and excellence. With a legacy that spans generations, the hospital has maintained an unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare in the region. Established in the 1890s, St. John's Riverside has been an integral part of its community by continuously evolving to meet the medical needs of its patients. The hospital was founded on a strong foundation of nursing and community service, dating back to the inception of the Cochran School of Nursing in 1894, the oldest hospital-based nursing school in the metropolitan area. This historical commitment has made the nursing staff not only the backbone but the heart and soul of the hospital, furnishing superior patient and family-oriented care with compassionate attention to those in need.

St. John's Riverside Hospital remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for its patients by combining personalized care with advanced medical technology. The hospital offers a collaborative and supportive work environment that fosters professional growth and excellence in clinical practice. As an equal opportunity employer, St. John's Riverside Hospital ensures a non-discriminatory, inclusive workplace culture that respects diversity and compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. The hospital's philosophy centers on providing community-strong healthcare, emphasizing safety, respect, and a therapeutic milieu across all services. This approach ensures a welcoming and effective environment for patients, families, and staff alike.

The role of Unit Secretary at St. John's Riverside Hospital is vital to the daily operations of the nursing unit, particularly within behavioral health services. This position involves performing clerical and administrative duties to facilitate effective communication and coordination at the nurse’s station. The Unit Secretary acts as a pivotal communication link among patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital staff, ensuring that the unit functions smoothly and efficiently. Key responsibilities include managing patient records in both electronic and hard copy formats, assisting with order entry and data retrieval, and adhering to regulatory procedures such as the management of Medicare important message forms prior to patient discharge. The role requires maintaining a clean and organized nurse’s station, coordinating patient transportation and escort within the hospital, and supporting the nursing staff by monitoring unit inventory and reporting maintenance needs.

The Unit Secretary is entrusted with maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for behavioral health patients by demonstrating respect, sensitivity, and confidentiality. Effective interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation are essential due to extensive interactions with patients and healthcare teams. The position demands proficiency in medical terminology and hospital information systems, with knowledge of Meditech or similar medical database systems being highly preferred. Overall, this role serves as the operational backbone at the nurse's station, ensuring optimal unit performance and patient care support in a dynamic clinical setting.
