Job Description
Enloe Health Nutrition and Food Service Department, a union-represented entity, operates in close partnership with Thomas Cuisine, a distinguished and award-winning contract food service company founded in 1986. Thomas Cuisine champions the healing power of whole foods and specializes in preparing scratch-made cuisine fresh each day. The company is privately held, emphasizing quality, health, and customer-centric service as its core values. Every team member at Thomas Cuisine acts as an ambassador, embodying the company's mission, values, and ethical standards, dedicated to 'doing the right thing' and forging meaningful relationships.
Thomas Cuisine's collaboration with Enloe Health Nutrition and Food Service Department focuses on delivering top-tier meal services within an acute healthcare setting, where dietetic precision and food safety are paramount. The organization is committed to providing comprehensive benefits to full-time and part-time employees, including medical, dental, and vision plans, paid time off, retirement savings with 401(k) matching, referral programs, wellness initiatives, and more.
The role of Unit Host is a pivotal position within this healthcare food service context, responsible for assisting in the preparation and timely delivery of meals to patients, staff, and visitors. This position demands strict adherence to dietary guidelines and safety standards, ensuring all meals meet physician-prescribed diets and nutritional restrictions. The Unit Host also maintains cleanliness and order in kitchen and dining environments, adheres to proper food storage protocols—including First In, First Out (FIFO)—and manages waste disposal according to health and safety regulations.
The Unit Host acts as a vital liaison between the food service team and the clinical staff, working closely with nursing personnel and clinical dietitians to address specialized dietary needs, such as calorie-controlled or restricted diets. This role requires impeccable customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced hospital environment. The Unit Host completes critical documentation related to safety and temperature controls, follows infection prevention protocols including those for isolation rooms, and contributes actively to the facility’s safety meetings and risk management policies.
Prospective candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED, with food handling certification mandated within seven days of hiring. While prior experience in a similar role is beneficial, it is not a requirement, as the company values strong communication, teamwork, adaptability, and a thorough understanding of food safety practices. Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, prolonged standing, walking, bending, and manual dexterity required to operate kitchen equipment and meal ordering systems effectively.
Enloe Health Nutrition and Food Service Department, in partnership with Thomas Cuisine, embraces diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, fostering a workplace where all employees feel valued, safe, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. This inclusive environment ensures every team member can contribute to a shared mission: enhancing community health and well-being through real, nutritious food. Individuals who are passionate about quality food service and motivated to make a positive impact will find this a rewarding opportunity to grow professionally and personally.
