The Unit Custodian position at Michigan Medicine is a full-time, onsite role located in Ann Arbor, MI. It plays a critical role within the Environmental Services department, contributing directly to the cleanliness, hygiene, and overall maintenance of hospital environments, which are crucial for patient safety and care quality. The custodian is responsible for a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks ensuring high standards of cleanliness and safety throughout the hospital. The salary range for this position is between $41,121.60 and $43,513.60 annually, and it is covered under the AFSCME union collective bargaining agreement, which governs wages, benefits, hours, and other terms of employment.

This role involves regular use of various cleaning equipment and techniques, including vacuum and spray/vacuum cleaning machines, dusting, polishing furniture, cleaning patient bedside equipment, and maintaining restroom supplies. Custodians must be physically capable of performing demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling without restrictions, and must be able to work around sick and disabled patients with compassion and professionalism. The working hours are from 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday, which may suit candidates who prefer night shifts.

Job Duties

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment
  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings
  • Clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass, and both sides of interior glass while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures
  • Stock restroom supplies
  • Dust venetian blinds while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Spot wash walls to remove such items as splash marks around sinks and fingerprints around light switches
  • Clean patient bedside equipment
  • Make beds and change linen
  • Change or replace shower or cubicle curtains while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Collect and transport waste materials to a central location
  • Report items in need of repair
  • Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways
  • Wet mop rooms and small areas of floor or stairs to clean up such items as spilled liquid or food
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions
  • Open or lock buildings or rooms
  • Turn on and off lights and equipment
  • Replace burnt-out incandescent light bulbs while standing on the floor or a step ladder
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings
  • Collect and transport soiled linen to central locations
  • Clean the assigned area or work and equipment
  • Wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas
  • Hand mop areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment
  • Operate walk-behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning
  • Operate touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment
