Job Description
U-Haul is a renowned company specializing in moving, storage, and rental solutions that cater to individuals and families looking for efficient and affordable ways to relocate or store their belongings. Established to provide convenient and reliable services, U-Haul operates a wide network of moving and storage centers across the United States, offering trucks, trailers, and storage units that meet diverse customer needs. The company is committed to outstanding customer service, affordability, and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in the self-moving industry. The employment type for the role of General Manager at U-Haul is full-time with a competitive monthly salary ranging from $5,033.82 to $5,183.82. Located in Syracuse, New York, this position promises a stable career with attractive financial rewards and opportunities for growth.
The General Manager role at U-Haul involves comprehensive management responsibilities critical to ensuring the profitability and efficiency of the moving and storage center. The successful candidate will be tasked with overseeing daily operations, managing inventory, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the highest level of customer service. This role is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring strong leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and financial acumen. One of the key facets of the job is staff management — hiring, mentoring, and leading a team that is motivated and capable of providing excellent customer service. Additionally, the General Manager will oversee the fleet, ensuring that all equipment is clean, well-maintained, and ready for customer use. Financial responsibilities include conducting profit and loss analyses and managing the personnel budget effectively to meet the center's financial goals.
U-Haul's corporate culture emphasizes quick hiring and immediate compensation, highlighted by their motto 'Hire Fast, Pay Fast.' This innovative approach allows candidates to start quickly and receive payment promptly, including pay for two hands-on working interviews and bonuses for certifications completed. New General Managers can earn a $100 hiring bonus plus an additional $300 after successfully completing the U-Haul Equipment Inspection and Verification through the company’s certification program.
This role comes with an extensive employee benefits package designed to support both personal and professional well-being. Eligible employees gain access to comprehensive medical coverage, prescription plans, dental and vision insurance, and various wellness programs such as gym reimbursements and weight management support. Additional benefits include virtual doctor visits, career stability, advancement opportunities, tuition reimbursement, and free courses through U-Haul University. Financial benefits encompass a 401(k) savings plan, employee stock ownership plan, life insurance, critical illness coverage, and legal and identity theft protection. This comprehensive support structure reflects U-Haul’s commitment to employee growth, health, and financial security.
The work environment is one where safety is paramount given the moderate risks involved, including operating moving equipment and managing chemicals. Protective gear and clothing are provided as needed to safeguard staff. Physically, the role requires stamina and some exertion such as standing for long periods, maneuvering equipment, and lifting items weighing a minimum of 50 pounds. U-Haul also maintains a strong stance on health by implementing a tobacco-free hiring policy in many states to foster a healthier workplace.
U-Haul values diversity and inclusion, providing equal employment opportunities to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected classification. The company also ensures accommodations during the selection process for those who need them, respecting privacy and fairness throughout.
This General Manager position is ideal for individuals with a management background in retail or service industries who seek a challenging and rewarding career in a well-established company. It offers the chance to lead a dedicated team, impact business success directly, and enjoy a robust support system and benefits. U-Haul’s blend of fast-paced operational responsibilities and comprehensive employee support makes it a distinguished workplace in the moving and storage industry.
