Job Description

Penske Truck Leasing is a premier global transportation provider renowned for delivering essential and innovative transportation, logistics, and technology services. Headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, this company is committed to driving excellence and ensuring customer success through its vast network and advanced solutions. Penske Truck Leasing operates in numerous locations across the United States and beyond, providing high-quality vehicle leasing, maintenance, and transportation services to various industries. This positions Penske as a leader in the trucking and logistics sector, catering to the evolving needs of businesses ranging from small enterprises to large corporations.

The role of Hiker (Vehicle Transporter/Truck Driver) at Penske Truck Leasing is a unique and vital position responsible for the efficient delivery and return of vehicles to Penske locations and customers. This role primarily involves the movement of box trucks up to 26 feet in length, and for CDL Class A licensed drivers, it includes operating tractors and trailers. The Hiker position occasionally supports the service department by delivering parts and equipment, making it an integral part of the company's transportation operations. This position is designed as a casual, on-call part-time opportunity, ideally suited for licensed CDL Class B or CDL Class A drivers seeking supplemental income with flexible hours. Drivers can expect to work anywhere from zero to 25 hours per week, depending on business needs.

Located at the Penske facility in South Portland, Maine, the Hiker role demands adherence to strict safety procedures and operational standards. Drivers are expected to operate vehicles safely and responsibly, perform vehicle inspections before embarking on deliveries, and report any defects or issues to management. The job also requires obtaining signatures or receipts for delivered goods and collecting payments when necessary. Reporting on vehicle conditions, accidents, or traffic violations is a key responsibility to ensure regulatory compliance and maintain high service standards.

Beyond the hands-on driving duties, the role calls for individuals who can work independently while maintaining a strong customer service orientation, organizational skills, and a positive attitude. Regular and predictable attendance is critical, as the position is safety sensitive and regulated by the Department of Transportation. Drivers must maintain a current driver qualification file, including regular medical examinations, motor vehicle record checks, and compliance with drug and alcohol testing requirements mandated by federal regulations. The ability to operate in a constant state of alertness and to uphold safety protocols is essential.

Physical requirements for this position include good vision and hearing, the ability to frequently stand, walk, and sit, and the capacity to lift and move weights of up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Drivers must be capable of safely entering and exiting vehicles and cargo areas during their duties. Penske is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

In summary, the Hiker (Vehicle Transporter/Truck Driver) role at Penske Truck Leasing offers a flexible, part-time driving opportunity within a leading global transportation provider. It combines the responsibility of safe and efficient vehicle movement with the chance to support service operations, making it an appealing choice for qualified CDL drivers seeking supplemental income in a well-established and respected company.
