Job Description
The Transfer Driver position is a critical role within the logistics and warehouse operations of a company that operates two primary warehouse locations: Pecan and Montgomery. This role reports directly to the Support Services Manager and is essential to ensuring seamless movement of raw materials, supplies, and finished goods between these two sites to support continuous production and distribution efforts. The company, known for its commitment to safety, efficiency, and quality, values employees who maintain high standards in their work and contribute to maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
This position is physically demanding and involves the use of commercial motor vehicles, including yard trucks and box trucks, as well as various types of forklifts. The Transfer Driver is responsible for following transfer orders issued by Shift Supervisors, ensuring that all materials are moved accurately and on time between locations. This role directly impacts production efficiency by ensuring that the Montgomery warehouse receives all necessary raw materials and supplies from the Pecan warehouse and vice versa, finished goods are transferred back for further processing or shipment.
Transfer Drivers operate specialized equipment such as stand-up, sit-down, and order-picker forklifts, 53-foot trailers on yard trucks, 26-foot box trucks, and other material handling machinery like shrink-wrap and banding machines. Attention to detail is crucial for locating, pulling, loading, and unloading materials precisely as directed by production and transfer orders. The position also requires the use of computer systems to process shipments and scan inventory accurately.
Key competencies for this role include strict adherence to safety protocols, a proactive approach to housekeeping, and consistent reporting of production and quality data. Transfer Drivers must communicate effectively with both the Shift Supervisors and department personnel, particularly those in the Stake Flag Department, to ensure optimal supply levels and quick resolution of any issues or safety concerns. This role contributes to the company’s continuous improvement culture by identifying and reporting opportunities for operational enhancements.
Preferred candidates will have an excellent safety and attendance record, a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and strong communication skills. Basic math and computer skills, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of production schedules also support successful performance in this role. In addition, candidates must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, work independently with minimal supervision, and foster professional relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
Physically, the Transfer Driver must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and lift up to 75 pounds regularly, and work under varying ambient conditions including exposure to dust, heat, cold, and mild chemical irritants. The company provides comprehensive on-the-job and online training covering safety, quality, and production procedures to ensure that all Transfer Drivers are well-prepared for their responsibilities, typically completing this training within one month.
Overall, the Transfer Driver is a cornerstone of the operational framework that supports warehouse logistics and inter-warehouse material transfer. This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the company's production success, ensuring inventory is reliably managed and materials flow efficiently between the Pecan and Montgomery warehouses.
