Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years railroad engineering experience or train dispatching experience
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute
  • Strong communication skills
  • Successful completion of safety tests
  • Ability to work flexible hours including overtime and on-call shifts
  • Pass pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report
  • Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and DOT drug screen
  • Complete and maintain annual safety certification and testing
  • Ability to pass color/vision exams
  • Ability to hear and distinguish auditory signals

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Previous train dispatching experience preferred or minimum 2 years experience as a railroad engineer
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly and accurately using communication devices
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute
  • Accurate data input skills
  • Available to work a 40-hour week with overtime, on-call, and alternate shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to make quick and accurate decisions in high-pressure environments
  • Must pass required tests prior to completing training period

Job Duties

  • Ensure compliance with federal and company safety rules, policies and procedures
  • Respond to safety concerns and take appropriate action
  • Monitor train movement and conditions affecting movements such as weather, crew and equipment availability
  • Coordinate responses to unplanned events and emergencies to minimize passenger inconvenience and delays
  • Perform administrative duties including documenting train movements, delays, and rule violations
  • Update digital message signs and maintain accurate communications such as track bulletins and track warrants
  • Direct and supervise all train crews, maintenance of way, and signal employees working on or near railroad tracks
  • Engage consistently in promoting Herzog's company culture and behaviors
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality
  • Perform other duties as assigned
