Job Description
Union Pacific is a leading transportation company and a vital part of North America’s freight rail network. With a rich history and reputation for operational excellence, Union Pacific plays a critical role in transporting goods efficiently across a vast network spanning numerous states. Its commitment to safety, innovation, and continuous improvement has made it a preferred employer in the railroad industry. Union Pacific’s workforce is at the core of its success, and the company provides extensive training, support, and career advancement opportunities to its employees. This position is based in Milwaukee, WI, with the potential to work in other locations such as Butler, WI, and Proviso, IL, depending on seniority and business needs. Positions may involve road (traveling) work or yard roles within these areas, providing diverse experiences in the railroad operations environment.
The Train Crew role at Union Pacific is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team responsible for the safe and timely movement of customer freight. This entry-level position does not require prior railroad experience, as comprehensive training is provided over a 14-week period, combining classroom instruction with on-the-job training. Candidates will learn to inspect equipment, operate various devices such as remote control locomotives, and communicate effectively with other crew members, yard controllers, and dispatchers. The role offers a strong foundation in the railroad industry with the option to advance toward locomotive engineer certification and other specialized roles.
Financially, this role offers a starting salary of approximately $80,000 annually, with the potential to exceed $100,000 after five years of service. Union Pacific offers competitive benefits, including comprehensive medical insurance with prescription coverage, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance. To succeed in this role, candidates must be physically capable, able to work in varying outdoor conditions, and willing to commit to their craft and location for at least two years. Seniority governs location assignments and potential transfers, with some positions requiring travel and overnight stays. Union Pacific emphasizes a drug-free workplace, which includes random drug and alcohol testing.
Working conditions include exposure to all weather elements, irregular work hours, on-call duties seven days a week, and physically demanding tasks such as bending, lifting, and climbing. Employees are expected to maintain strict adherence to safety rules and federal regulations. Union Pacific fosters a strengths-based and performance-oriented culture with learning and development opportunities, including educational assistance programs. Additionally, employees benefit from retirement plans like 401(k), an employee stock purchase plan, wellness programs, and strong union representation for insurance and workplace protections. This role is ideal for individuals seeking a stable, rewarding career in the transportation industry and offers a clear path for career progression within a renowned and respected company.
