The role of the Tourism and Event Center Manager is critical to the success of Sandoval County's tourism strategy. This position, operating under general supervision and reporting directly to the Director of Economic Development, is responsible for providing financial oversight and strategic planning for the county's branding, tourism, and marketing initiatives. The Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the Tourism and Event Center, including event coordination, staffing, and facility management. Key duties include developing policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency and creating innovative marketing plans that align with the NM True Brand Campaign. This role requires an individual who excels in building relationships with local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions to enhance the county's profile and attract more visitors.
Additionally, the Manager plays a vital role in grant writing, compliance, and administration to secure funding that supports tourism development projects. Quarterly meetings with the County Lodgers Tax Board and Tourism Alliance Committees are integral to this position, ensuring alignment with the county’s goals and transparency in reporting. The Manager also coordinates with various departments, including Public Works and the County Marketing and Communications Department, to maintain the facility and promote county events effectively. Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in tourism, hospitality, marketing, economic development, business administration or related field
- Four years’ experience in managing or coordinating events in a convention and/or conference center environment
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Ability to maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
- Proficiency in grant writing and administration preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
- Knowledge of County procurement regulations
- Availability to attend meetings, seminars, and workshops as required
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in tourism, hospitality, marketing, economic development, business administration or related field
- Four years’ experience in managing or coordinating events in a convention and/or conference center environment
- Experience developing marketing and branding concepts
- Experience with successful grant writing, compliance and administration is highly desirable
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build relationships with local businesses and stakeholders
- Proficiency in website management and content creation
- Experience in financial oversight and budget management
- Ability to prepare and deliver presentations
- Knowledge of event center operations and facility management
Job Duties
- Executes marketing strategies and leads efforts to generate clients and leads for the Event Center through in-house sales, presentations, tours of the facility, and sales calls to potential groups and events managers to increase Center utilization
- Develops marketing methods to ensure the Event Center remains competitive in order to achieve optimum utilization
- Assures the Event Center property is properly maintained and coordinates with County Public Works on maintenance needs
- Provides advisory support in creative message development
- contributes to and monitors the flow of new web content
- Coordinates with the web maintenance provider to create a bi-monthly report on the effectiveness of the website
- Oversees website design, generates content and oversees printed collateral for internal and external marketing users
- Plans new research-based advertising strategies for current and subsequent years that will increase leisure travel market share
- Develops relationships with national, international and regional tourism-based publications and writers, tours operators and travel agents
- Designs, develops and conducts familiarization tours of Sandoval County for media, event planning, tour operators and travel agents
- Prepares press kits for media
- writes press releases, creates promotional materials, builds campaigns and develops stories to highlight the unique selling points of the Event Center and Sandoval County attractions
- Coordinates with area media, in coordination and with the Office of the County Manager, and County Marketing and Communications Department
- Provides educational and informational programs for hospitality sector personnel on attractions and events in Sandoval County
- Gathers data and prepares annual tourism situational analysis for the Tourism Alliance, Lodgers Tax Board, Chamber of Commerce, and/or the Board of County Commissioners
- Prepares and delivers presentations to both local and regional civic and governmental organizations on Tourism
- Represents the County in joint planning sessions to establish regional tourism activities
- serves on local committees that enhance tourism and foster economic development
- Attends meetings, seminars, conventions, and workshops to further knowledge, stay informed of the changes in the tourism industry, and exchange information
- Coordinates and creates ideas for special events as needed
- Writes and administers assigned grants
- oversees contracted staff and grant documents, finances, and files
- Reviews, monitors, and maintains the department financial records and budgets
- reconciles event center revenue, receipts, expenses, funding, budget, records and similar aspects for assigned duties
- Provides reports and information for the development of the departmental budget
- Maintains records, researches cost, obtains estimates according to County procurement regulations
- Performs contract management for Event Center functions and clients
- conducts tours and coordinates staff schedules, inspections, lease and supporting document review, maintenance, security and janitorial services for the rental of the event center as needed
- Provides administrative and technical support including preparing letters, resolutions, commission agenda items and agreements for the Director
