Job Description

The role available is a Food Service Worker position within the Student Nutrition department. This role is essential in ensuring that quality food is prepared and served in accordance with menu requirements and health and safety standards. The primary focus of the Food Service Worker is to prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food, maintain high standards in food production, and uphold strict sanitation and safety practices. The employee in this position will be responsible for following tested, uniform recipes to ensure consistency and quality in meal preparation. They will serve food on schedules aligned with departmental policies, practice portion control, and ensure proper storage and handling of all food items and supplies in a safe and organized manner.
Key responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen and storage areas, operating kitchen equipment safely, and following established safety and sanitation procedures. The role also involves handling cashier functions accurately, assisting with food requisitions and orders, and keeping daily food preparation records. This position requires teamwork and cooperation with fellow staff members, maintaining confidentiality, and performing additional duties as assigned by the Director of Student Nutrition or other designated supervisors.
Physical demands of the job include continual standing, walking, pushing, and pulling, with frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and moderate lifting and carrying. The work environment may expose employees to extreme hot and cold temperatures. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with food handler certification. No previous food service experience is required, but the ability to understand food preparation and safety instructions, knowledge of kitchen equipment, and basic arithmetic skills are essential.

Job Duties
- prepare quality food according to a planned menu of tested, uniform recipes
- serve food according to meal schedules, departmental policies, and procedures
- practice and promote portion control and proper use of leftovers
- ensure proper storage and handling of food items and supplies in a safe manner
- maintain a clean and organized storage area
- operate and use utensils and equipment according to prescribed safety standards
- follow established procedures to meet high standards of cleanliness, health, and safety
- keep garbage collection containers and areas neat and sanitary
- correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately
- maintain personal appearance and hygiene
- handle and record cashier functions accurately
- help record food requisitions and orders necessary supplies
- maintain daily food preparation records
- promote teamwork and interaction with fellow staff members
- maintain complete confidentiality
- perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Student Nutrition or designee
