Job Description
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Dining and Catering is a self-operated dining department that prides itself on offering high-quality food service to a diverse community consisting of students, faculty, staff, museum visitors, and the general public. Known for its commitment to culinary excellence and exceptional customer service, RISD Dining ensures a welcoming and professional environment that supports the school's educational mission and fosters a sense of community through food. The dining services operate seven days a week, providing a wide array of meals and catering options across various campus locations. RISD Dining aims to maintain the highest standards of food safety, cleanliness, and hospitality, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and attention to detail.
The Food Service Worker position is a temporary, part-time role within this dynamic environment. The role involves assisting the culinary and bakery staff in various food preparation activities, including gathering, washing, and cutting vegetables, and producing station-specific food items following established recipes. Food Service Workers play a crucial part in setting up and breaking down dining locations across the campus, managing dishwashing operations, and ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of workspaces and equipment. This position requires flexibility, as employees must be able to work across multiple locations as directed by supervisors to meet department needs.
Working in this role demands a strong customer service orientation and the ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team. The responsibilities extend to operating dish machines, stocking and maintaining food supplies, and serving prepared meals in accordance with culinary specifications. Food Service Workers are expected to follow all health code procedures rigorously, including temperature management, personal hygiene, and sanitation standards. Additionally, they will be responsible for managing waste removal, cleaning beverage machines, and handling cash registers professionally.
Candidates for this role should possess at least a high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with a preference for those having a minimum of one year of experience in a restaurant, college, or cafe-style food service environment. Key skills include attention to detail, good communication abilities, and the physical stamina required to move between different auxiliary operations daily. Prior customer service experience is valued but not mandatory. Importantly, Dining and Catering staff are considered essential personnel, which means they are required to work even when the school is closed.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a vibrant, artistic community, supporting RISD's mission through quality dining experiences. Applicants must submit a resume as part of the application process, and while a cover letter is optional, candidates who provide one can better showcase their suitability for the role. The successful applicant will be subject to pre-employment background screening. RISD is a committed equal opportunity employer, valuing diversity and inclusivity as fundamental principles of its community and educational philosophy.
