Job Description
Wesleyan University Athletic Department is situated within the modern Freeman Athletic Center, an advanced facility designed to support the robust athletic programs at Wesleyan. As a valued member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), the department sponsors thirty varsity sports, underscoring its commitment to blending athletics with a Wesleyan scholar-athlete’s liberal arts education. The department is staffed by a team of highly trained, committed faculty coaches, administrators, and support personnel who work collaboratively to help student-athletes excel both academically and athletically. This environment fosters personal growth, teamwork, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence, embodying the university’s holistic approach to education.
The Temporary Event Support Staff role reports directly to the Assistant Athletics Director, Facilities and Event Operations, playing a critical behind-the-scenes function during athletic events and other large-scale gatherings at the Freeman Athletic Center. This position is pivotal in ensuring the safety and security of all event attendees while maintaining smooth operations during events. The staff are charged with monitoring access points to the facility, patrolling the premises, responding promptly and effectively to any incidents or emergencies, and assisting with crowd control to prevent disruptions or hazards.
This on-campus position offers a competitive hourly wage of $17.50 and emphasizes the importance of communication skills and the ability to maintain calm in sometimes tense situations. The Temporary Event Support Staff must be approachable and respectful toward event patrons, enhancing the overall experience while prioritizing safety. Ideal candidates typically have experience working at large college events and sports championships, where crowd dynamics require vigilance and professionalism. Working as Temporary Event Support Staff not only provides an opportunity to engage closely with the Wesleyan community but also offers valuable experience in event operations, public safety, and crisis management within an academic setting.
Wesleyan University is an inclusive employer committed to equal opportunity and non-discrimination on a wide array of bases, including race, religion, gender identity, and more. This commitment creates a welcoming workplace environment that values diversity and fosters mutual respect. The university also complies with federal safety regulations such as the Clery Act, ensuring a safe and transparent campus experience for students, staff, and visitors. Candidates interested in this position are required to submit a cover letter and resume as part of their application process. Offers made to external applicants are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to the dynamic and dedicated athletics culture at Wesleyan University while gaining meaningful experience in event safety and support.
