Job Description

Currently, the University of Notre Dame Operations, Events, and Safety (UOES) division is seeking Temporary/On-call Cooks to join their Campus and Auxiliary Dining Halls team within its Campus Dining department. The UOES division plays a critical role in overseeing the University's event management, hospitality services, and customer service functions. Furthermore, the division supports vital areas such as student life, academic initiatives, research efforts, and special milestone celebrations, boosting the overall Notre Dame experience.
The role of the Temporary Cook is essential as they support the daily culinary operations on campus. This position involves working as part of a dynamic culinary production team to prepare, assemble, cook, and sanitize food items according to established standards of service and hospitality. The Cook will be responsible for producing a wide variety of menu items, including entrées, sides, soups, and desserts, strictly adhering to standardized recipes designed for large-scale dining operations. In addition, the Cook must ensure all food preparation and serving procedures comply fully with food safety and sanitation guidelines, as well as university health department regulations, guaranteeing the utmost safety and satisfaction for all patrons.
Additional duties include monitoring food quality, taste, and presentation to maintain high standards that meet student expectations, operating kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, fryers, slicers, and mixers safely and efficiently, and assisting with inventory management. This involves receiving, properly storing, and rotating food products to prevent waste and maintain freshness. Maintaining a clean and organized culinary workspace, including food preparation stations, cooking equipment, and storage areas, is also a critical part of the role.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in a food preparation or cook role preferred
- Ability to follow standardized recipes and food safety guidelines
- Ability to stand for long periods and perform physical tasks
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
- Commitment to maintaining clean and safe kitchen environments
- Ability to lift and move items up to 25 pounds safely
Job Qualifications
- Capable of managing time effectively with minimal supervision
- Positive respectful and committed to the schedule you create
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Ability to maintain a standing position for extended periods of time up to 6 hours at a time
- Ability to move around the cafe to attend to the needs of guests
- Ability to move lift and handle equipment supplies and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds
- Ability to position self to move items weighing up to 25 pounds from floor to shelves and cabinets above and below counter height
- Follow food safety procedures for handling storing and serving food products
Job Duties
- Prepare and cook a wide variety of menu items including entrees sides soups and desserts following standardized recipes and production sheets for large scale dining operations
- Ensure all food is prepared and served in accordance with established food safety and sanitation guidelines and university health department regulations
- Monitor food quality taste and presentation making adjustments as needed to maintain high standards and student satisfaction
- Operate and maintain a variety of kitchen equipment including ovens grills fryers slicers and mixers in a safe and efficient manner
- Assist with inventory management including receiving storing and rotating food products to minimize waste and ensure freshness
- Maintain a clean and organized work area including food preparation stations cooking equipment and storage areas
