Job Description

Cambridge Public Schools is a well-established educational institution committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for students and staff alike. The district emphasizes a community-oriented approach to education, focusing on inclusivity, diversity, and the well-being of its students. Known for its comprehensive educational programs and dedicated personnel, Cambridge Public Schools supports a variety of roles essential to maintaining its high-quality educational services, including positions within its Food Service Department. As part of its ongoing mission to ensure nutritional and efficient meal services, the district hires temporary staff to support daily operations during peak times or when regular staff members are unavailable. This strategy ensures that the food service maintains optimal functioning without disruption to students or staff. The Food Service Department of Cambridge Public Schools plays a crucial role in managing school meals with adherence to strict safety, sanitation, and nutritional standards. The team under the supervision of the Director of Food Services works diligently to meet these stringent standards while fostering a welcoming environment for students and staff across the district. The temporary cashier position is pivotal within this department, reinforcing the daily operational flow and enhancing customer interactions that directly impact the dining experience of students.

The role of temporary cashier within the Food Service Department requires a dedicated and reliable individual who acts under the guidance of the Director of Food Services and the Head of Kitchen. This position offers temporary coverage as required, making it highly flexible yet essential to maintaining uninterrupted service. The temporary cashier is chiefly responsible for managing transactions, operating the district's point of sale system efficiently, and ensuring compliance with all offer versus serve meal requirements. Additionally, the role involves supporting food ordering, inventory control, delivery checking, and food preparation documentation. The physical demands of this job include continuous lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, bending, pushing, pulling, and manual handling activities, with occasional climbing and squatting, underscoring the need for physical fitness and endurance. Competency in using computers for email and other software, alongside cash register operation, is essential. This role also expects staff to maintain exemplary personal appearance and adhere to departmental dress codes while upholding all safety and sanitation regulations. Key responsibilities extend beyond routine cash handling and customer service, involving accountability report submissions as per state and federal regulations, and assisting with cleanliness and sanitation in both dining and kitchen areas. Ultimately, the temporary cashier serves as a vital link between the Food Service team and the school community, embodying the district’s commitment to customer service and cooperative teamwork. The position is compensated in accordance with the Food Service Salary Schedule, ensuring fair remuneration reflective of the role’s responsibilities and requirements. Cambridge Public Schools also enforces a policy that requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by their first day of employment, underscoring its commitment to community health and safety.
