The role of the restaurant shift leader at McAlister's involves contributing to the operational success of the restaurant by overseeing daily activities and ensuring high standards of food quality, customer service, cleanliness, safety, and sanitation are consistently met. Reporting directly to the General Manager or Assistant Manager, the shift leader is responsible for managing front-of-house (FOH) and back-of-house (BOH) operations during assigned shifts and stepping up to lead in the absence of senior management.

A key part of the shift leader's responsibilities is to supervise team members, foster a positive and productive work environment, and deliver outstanding guest experiences. This includes handling any immediate issues with employees, suppliers, or guests, and escalating concerns to management when necessary. The shift leader is also entrusted with managing staff scheduling to optimize labor costs and reduce overtime while maintaining excellent service speed and quality.

In addition to operational duties, the shift leader supports continuous team development by assisting with onboarding new hires and ongoing training for existing staff. This role demands strong leadership skills, adaptability in a fast-paced environment, and a proactive approach to enforcing company policies and standards. The shift leader is expected to manage cash handling procedures accurately and assume responsibility for opening and closing the restaurant when senior managers are unavailable.

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high energy, and physically demanding environment
  • Must be able to spend 90% of work time standing
  • Must be able to spend 10% of work time sitting
  • Must use all sensory capabilities such as vision, hearing, taste, smell, touch, and speech
  • Must use physical capabilities such as walking, bending, kneeling, manipulating objects, hand flexibility, stretching, squatting, crawling, lifting, climbing, and stooping
  • Must be able to regularly lift and carry loads over 25 pounds and up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with guests and team members in the primary language of the restaurant (mainly English)
  • Must be able to hear with 100% accuracy with correction
  • Must be able to see with 20/20 vision with correction
  • Reliable transportation

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in the food service industry
  • Supervisory experience is a plus but not required
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Retail experience

Job Duties

  • Provide supervision during assigned shifts
  • Create a positive experience and environment for team members and guests
  • Manage FOH and BOH shift responsibilities including staff scheduling to minimize overtime and achieve daily labor controls and costs as assigned by management
  • Oversee service speed to ensure a positive guest experience
  • Handle guest comments and complaints
  • Supervise daily shifts to maintain McAlister's standards, product quality, and cleanliness
  • Assist in ongoing training of team members including new hires and existing staff to ensure procedures and processes are followed
  • Enforce policies and uniform standards
  • Ensure proper cash handling procedures are followed
  • Open and close the restaurant in absence of senior management
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management
